Just bought a 05 SD F350 with 110000 miles on it. Ive had it a week now and it has run/started flawlessly ever since. Until now!
I change the oil and filter and both fuel filters over the past weekend. It ran great as usual after the new filters and all. Took it on a good 40 mile drive down the highway yesterday and all was fine. Before i went home i fueled up for the first time in the truck. I went to a busy station and filled up the tank with (diesel) as the tank was very low. Almost just a minute after i started the truck up after fueling my wife noticed smoke out the back of the truck from the exhaust.
Not really worried i said its diesel it will be ok. On the way home i noticed the truck slightly running rough and seemed to lack all the power it had. After getting off the highway 40 miles later it seemed worse. I came to the light right off the highway and the truck was bucking and just died about 5 seconds after comming to a stop. It would not start back up! It turned over and kind of tried to start but never would.

Today after work i pulled the fuel seperator out to check for water and or clogged filter. It was clean and i didnt see any water in the pail i cought the water in. I also noticed the coolant res was empty and there was dried white residue all over the battery and coolant tank. looked like it exploded!

I got people telling me i dont have enough oil pressure or i got blown head gaskets! I have a 9 second mustang that i built from the ground up and i know all about blown head gaskets.
No water in the oil! The smoke we saw looked white (it was at night). All seems like a HG to me but why wont it start? I can kill my mustangs HG's and still start the car?

This is too long im sorry. My first diesel truck! Everything i know about a gas car is ass backwards from a diesel so im trying to learn.:) (the hard way i guess)

Im just stumped that all this happened imediatly after fueling the truck for the first time. I almost bet my life it had to be fuel related or 1 in a million coincedential. Ive read a thousand recalls on these trucks in the last day that im sick! Even a recall of the fuel tanks coatings flaking off!

Thanks guys sorry so damn long!

Welcome to the site. Sucks that your first post is a problem. I am not totally positive on why your truck died. Sounds like you started sucking air, but I don't know. Wierd that it started doing it after you fueled up. Did you buy this truck from a Ford dealer? You should get an OASIS report from the dealer on the truck to see the past service work that may help you.

Thank you.....

Yea a guy from work was almost positive i sucked air from the tank being as low as it was. He was scooling me all day on diesels and how they will blow white smoke if you starve them for fuel!!!???
I bought it from just a car lot dealer."as is" of coarse. I dont blame the car lot cause whatever happened wasnt something a dealer could PATCH up or whatever. It happens i guess. My luck just sucks!
The truck is beautiful and it was running perfect. I just dont get it. These new diesels are very complicated if you have never messed with a diesel before! I feel like a damn woman not knowing about them and having somthing wrong thinking im going to get screwed by a repair shop!-mad

cycling the key a couple of times (w/out starting the truck)
and waiting til you hear the pump stop running will make sure
the lines are full & pressurized.

certainly DRIVING it down the road should resolve the "air in the lines"
issue VERY quickly...

On an 05, oil pressure is used to pump fuel to the injectors. The beauty of that system is the engine will quit before you run dry on oil. Could insufficient oil pressure be a problem. I leave that to people more technically inclined than myself.

Well i would say it could be a hundred different things that might cause this problem im having with the truck.

BUT,,,, where did the coolant go?

Why was it sprayed all over the the engine?

This is why i think im really screwed.....

My 05 was puking the coolant awhile back. At first they thought it was the head gasket....after alot of trial and error it was EGR ( ? I think that is what they called it :sorry ) module...sensor something. As you can tell I'm no mechanic. Any way after that was replaced it has run fine. Good lucl.

No codes in the eec. Nor was there a engine light when it ran like crap and died at the light.

A buddy of mine talked to a ford service manager and he said 1 of 2 things will cause what happened to me.
1, head gaskets

2, egr cooler or whatever leaking or blown...

And buy the way, 4k for a head gasket job at cost and 1500-2000 for the egr cooler deal.

Im having it towed back to the car lot i bought it from. They said they would check it out. I really hope its not head gaskets. I also checked with International on what a long block would cost me,,,,,,,,,,,10K with a core!-popcorn
