I buy at Speedway which is never higher than anyone else and most often a couple of cents lower....plus they give me rewards points and I'm close to another 25 gallons of free diesel or gas. Saturday, they jumped from $2.39 to $2.54 and it was holding as of yesterday; but 87 also jumped from $2.19 to $2.34. It's bothering me less now that I'm saving over $3.00 per day on cigarettes.:D

I live in a college town where "mom and pop" spring for most of the gasoline, and the retailers routinely hit our wallets hard. Diesel doesn't ordinarily fluctuate that much. The big truckstops are routinely up to $0.20 cheaper, but the closest one is the Flying J that's 60 miles North of me. I do frequent roadtrips so I mostly fill there or at one of the biggies in KY.

To me this is even further evidence of something questionable. The markets arent even open so how in hell do they justify a price change on a weekend? Especially that big. Too bad our representatives dont give a rat's @$$.

but what i cant figure out is this.

they get a shipment of fuels today,raise/lower the price on the pump today.2 days later they raise the price again.now there was no fuel delivery in this time frame.how can they raise the price without getting a delivery?they bought that tanker loadat a set price and its mostlikely already payed for.

The independent station owners I've talked to say they are just going off of what it will take to replace the stock. They watch the market on cable TV while running the store.

All the stations here in Marquette County are in cahoots with each other. Every one of them is always within .02 of all the others, no matter where you go. I noticed this morning on the way in to work the price at several jumped from $2.59 to $2.69. I found one on the way home still at $2.57 that hadn't raised their price yet, so I got $100 worth and put it into the 100 gal aux tank in back. I figured I saved enough to buy a cheeseburger for lunch tomorrow.

That's price-fixing and illegal....an anti-trust violation and, if caught, a retailer won't do it again. If you can prove that, report it to your state's Attorney General and/or Department of Public Utilities. Competing retailers are not permitted by law to personally communicate and set prices as a group. In that retailers, their family members and friends are motorists like us, they observe competitors' prices and communicate among each other.

There is absolutely no incentive for retailers to fix prices as a group. On the other hand, there's every reason not to as there's much incentive in them ratting each other out....both financially and competitionwise.

If there's any price-fixing going on it's happening inside the boardrooms of the oil companies themselves and/or among the distributors.

Illegal or not, I see it all the time here. Seems that every city within a few counties of me have different prices but they are always very close within a city. Cahoots? I think YES! -mad
