    New head studs

    I am agreeing. The other poster was trying to change out the bolts with re-enforced ones and take it back to the dealer and have them replace the head gaskets (under warranty) after stud replacement.

    I am sure that the manufacture would see that the bolts had been removed and the studs installed, and then say something like 'voided warranty'. Be careful trying to get that kind of stuff past the manufacture.

    WOW... I just talked to two my friends, who just got head gaskets replaced [at Ford] and was told it would cost $2200. (out here in San Diego). I know that they have to raise the body of the truck to conduct the repairs but wow that is costly. Thanks for the info.

    6.0 running rough when cold.

    Usually white or blue smoke means water in the cylinders. Could be you're getting a bad head gasket that leaks when cold and seals up at warmer temps. Black smoke is excess fuel (like too rich). Are you loosing coolant water?

    What is the recommeded flush time after 140K. Recently purchased the truck and no manual. The fluid is clear red and no burnt smell. I was thinking about just changin the filter for general maintenance.

    6.0 running rough when cold.

    Does your vehicle start in a normal idle and then jump in idle while you are waiting for it to warm up?? Most diesels need a warm up (not a jump in and drive) before proceeding. What WAS the code when the CEL was on??

    running rough 2003 6L

    The funny thing about that is that FORD knows that the ICP's are crap and they will not place them on the "recall list" for replacement. They cost about $160.00 and the mass air about $100.00. That equates to $1000.00 for labor. I am replacing mine myself..

    The coolant that I am losing is from the bottle cap, i.e. over pressure/temperature, because I can see it all over the side of engine under the bottle. At first I thought that I had a crack in the bottle itself, but no. Can you explain why I would have to replace the oil cooler too??? Thanks

    Because if you wait too long and the EGR fail closed you get high pressure in the engine and then blown head gaskets. (white smoke)
