Mornin all..apparently when the 06 is overfilled (fuel) there is a sensor that triggers the check engine lite...dealership mechanic tells me they can't do anything about my problem as I have a auxillary fuel tank gravity fed into the primary. This is the way I have my 04 setup and previously, my 2000 also. This 06 seems somewhat harder on the fuel consumption than my other trucks also, even tho it has the 3.73 gears which I felt should give it an advantage. Anyone have any thots on this? Thx

can anyone suggest where I could pursue this further as to how I might overcome this problem...I have talked to ambulance drivers that are operating 06 powerstrokes..they are experiencing the same issue with only one tank...thx

Be well!

i fill mine to the top everytime, till i see clean fuel
I would geuss the gravity feed , which is a no no with US DOT regs, is putting to much of a static head pressure against the tank and the computer is sensing to much pressure on the return leg :dunno so it thinks the return line is clogged or the HFCM is sensing a filter issue and setting a light

I would try deleting the gravity feed and put in a vavle to open and fill the stock tank, then shut off to prevent a pressure sense of sorts
just thinking out loud :D

Apparently FORD made a change in 06....dont know if
they got all the trucks or not...but your not alone in the
problem.

whats the code number, i bet its a P0460 code...
fuel level sensor A circuit...

i believe the problem has to do w/ the FUEL guage
not moving after x00 of miles (ive heard/read its 200)

the problem is in the programming of the overhead display i bet...
the truck thinks its got a 39gal tank and you is expecting it
to be empty...and its not...its either that or the truck EXPECTS
the fuel guage to move by at least some x00 miles.

ask your dealer to reprogram the overhead display to match your
combined tank size and i bet the problem goes away.

theres a TSB on it...but its a warning to mechanics...doesnt say
theirs a resolution...the overhead display USED to be programable...

then they took that away in 03 or 04 and made it a dealer service item
that only they could perform w/ their FORD tool

id talk to your dealer, see if they can reprogram the overhead to
a larger capacity tank...heres the TSB info.

Check Engine Light on with P0460 Fuel Level Sensor Code:
This may be caused by a miscommunication of fuel level ststus between the instrument cluster and engine computer. This code is set when the engine computer does not see the fuel level dropping it expects. It may be caused by customer-installed items, such as a remote start system that does not power the dash when activated, an over-sized fuel tank or in-bed fuel tank. If these conditions do not exsist, the engine computer should be reprogrammed using WDS/IDS version 43.4 or higher. This condition can also be caused by fueling with the engine running, parking on an angle, or driving up a long grade. In some cases the fuel level sender may be faulty, or have a sulfur build up on the sender and have code P463(use Chevron Techron Plus Concentrate to correct). TSB 06-13-11

I'd keep my eyes on transferflow's web site...when i was searching
around to confirm what i thought i discovered theyre having the problem
too...they even have a forum <which i didnt know until now>.

id take the TSB info to your shop...go to the mechanic <do not
bother w/ the service mgrs>...be KIND...show 'em what you discovered
and ask 'em if he can take a look at the over head display tank size
program...while hes there ask em to try a larger size...jsut to see if
he can even change the tank size...

be his friend, let him feel like hes not stupid, and that youre just
their to learn <from him> too...buy 'em some beer or donuts...itll
go a LONG way in the future too !

Lunch Time.

I was at the dealer near lunch time and ask if I could take him to lunch. Best $7.50 I ever spent. He now all ways comes to the desk when he sees me drive in, before the service writer gets to me to see what I am there for.:sweet

Your right on the money

about massaging the right people. I have made a point over the years to wine n dine the people I deal with on a regular basis. It has paid off in spades many times over. Last evening the dealership had the wife n I, and 30some of their (best) customers out to a private viewing lounge overlooking the Manitoba Finals Rodeo...wined n dined everyone and generally treated all of us pretty darned royally and no "shoptalk".

I recently got a CEL with P0460 and P2285. Not sure if they coincide with each other. I have changed the fuel filters but no change.

I have a stock fuel cell so it's not from a Aux. cell
