There's always a catch, isn't there. {regarding the first question}

Looks like a great site. I'm looking for an answer to a catalytic converter question on my '99 (early) crew, 4x4, auto, PSD. I just went to get it inspected/emissioned and they won't pass it without a catalytic converter. How do I tell if it was even originally equipped with one (shouldn't the engine information sticker say 'Catalyst' or similar?)?

Also, is there a 'high flow' unit out there that I need to get a hold of? Will a 'universal fit' one from Summit work with a diesel?

Your PSD came from the factory with a cat. I've never heard of a high flow unit off the shelf, but I know you can "make" a high flow unit.

Coming from the west coast I know the California/bordering state early 99 Powerstroke equipped trucks had cats,but Cali 99.5 trucks however did not.

I can't recall if it was the automatics or sticks transmission equipped PSD's required the cat,it's been awhile.

I know 6-spds have them. Some years of autos don't but I don't recall the years. I would look at Catco catalytics. I had a one on '92 suburban with 350 TBI with Vortec heads and cam, sounded great. If there's a 4" cat made I think they's be the ones to do it. Good luck!

My 99.5 with a 6-speed does not have one, and never did. The OEM exhaust is still in tact, excpet for the Walker BTM. I am guessing that unless you have a bypass pipe welded on (meaning there was a cat on there at one time that was taken off,) that it was OEM no cat. If that is the case, then they cannot fail you based on a lack of CAT. I think the early 99 autos were catless, but the 6-speeds may have had one. Anyway, it sounds like you are just dealing with someone that doesn't know what they are talking about. You should be able to pass as long as your OEM exhaust is in tact (meaning, there was never a CAT on the truck). If there was a cat on the truck at one time, then you need to get one from a wrecking yard truck and weld it on. Nothing that Summit has, that I am aware of will flow enough for a big diesel...

Okay, upon further study, I am pretty sure that I concur with '95 stroker. YOur truck did come from the factory with a CAT. Therefore, a 4" cat is in your future. Do some searches on Google and try Catco, as was suggested. Too bad, man...
