Winter oil weight

My 2 cents on switching back and forth between dino and syn. I had my truck into dealership to have work done and they changed oil after replacing the HPOP with fords dino oil. I went through two quarts of oil in less than 3k so I dumped it and went back to 5w-40 rotella syn and never used over 1 quart in 7500 miles since. It's had rotella in it since first change.

That makes me feel better payin big money for the syn rotella! So you change yours at 7500 miles then?

This mornin it was 29 and I cycled the gp's once and it fired right up no problem. So idk whats goin on with it haha. Im drainin oil now so we will see how it does with the syn oil in it tomarrow mornin. Gonna be another cold mornin!

Make sure to check battery cable connections also. Just a little corrosion on those crappy steel clamps can REALLY make a difference in the cold. There's a reason these trucks have two batteries, they need every bit of juice they can get in the winter. I have been able to start into the -20's without plugging in with good batteries and the synthetic oil. With 15w40 conventional it is a no-go not plugged in around zero. Hopefully you get some good results as well.

Yea im due to clean the cables for sure. Ive been runnin the 15 40 ever since i've owned it and it usually started with just one cycle. Many miles later I think its taking its toll on it. Im anxious to try this 5 40 syn to see how it does! Sounds like its a no brainer for the cold weather.

Oh, just FYI, I use 5W-40 synthetic blend oil (not full synthetic). I get it at Blain's Farm & Fleet here in Illinois. 2 gallon jug was $25 today. I use to run 10k (replace filter at 5k) and the Blackstone report was always fine. But I have switched back to a 5k oil change interval as I'm not putting a lot of miles on it but am instead doing a lot of short hops.

I dunno what is "synthetic blend" (the label says it has a "high synthetic content") but it does indeed quiet down the 7.3 on starts. I like not switching between winter and summer weights.

YES, you can run it all year around. I have been running 5-W40 for over 100,000 miles with out any problems and a few positive results (no romps and faster starting).
