Just ordered a SCT Tuner for my Superduty. To update it and to install custom tunes I need a windows based computer. All I have is mac. Searched around and found a window 8 laptop on Amazon for $170. Just wondering if it will do what I need. SCT just says you need a windows computer and not much else. You have to download a driver and then update the tuner and when you get custom tunes via email you have to install them into the tuner with the windows computer.

Computer on Amazon link - Cheap Laptop

Will this do it?

That should do nicely Crumm. I have a Windows 7 computer for my Autoenginuity program for reading codes. I am not updating it to Win 10. Drivers become the problem with a new version of Windows. I recommend you do not update yours. I run Macs in my household also.;tu

Yeah I have noticed that when windows machines are updated they go downhill fast. This is one reason I switched to mac years ago but it seems they are starting to suffer the same fate.

Dave and Crumm,

I am actually in the process of updating all my computers to Windows 10...... I started with my 8.1 machine because it SUCKED!!!!! I really like 10, and all the machines seem to run a bit faster on 10 than they did on 7........

Will 8.1 be ok to update a SCT Tuner. That's all I need it for. Might keep it in the center console for a web surfer or something but it won't be a computer that does much.

Got the computer and the tuner. Only took about 20 hours for the computer to update and do all its crap. Now I remember why I hated windows computers. Next step was to install the SCT updater and run it. What do ya know the computer wouldn't connect to the device.

Did some searching online and found

"Unfortuantely Windows 8.1 has an issue involving our drivers for our devices. We developed special drivers for this situation. Below you will find the instructions needed to complete the manual driver installation and once completed your device will communicate with your computer for updating and loading
custom tunes."

Crap oh dear I hate windows computers. Figured out how to manually install the driver which I have of course never done and we are now updated and ready to roll.

Now that I got done playing with the truck I went back to the computer to shut it down and found it in the middle of a windows 10 update. I figured whatever Scott said windows 10 was better. I now came back and checked it and it says it needs 11.0 GB of space to upgrade. For crying out loud why do they make things to be such a pain. Shutting it down and am hoping it will work again when my custom tunes arrive.
