numbering

on the 7.3L...If you are standing looking at the engine with the hood open, it looks like this (I would assume the 6.0 is the same) :

7 8
5 6
3 4
1 2

X

You are stading where the x is

Never gave it much thought on the ford diesel numbering, haven't needed to know (yet).

Looks like Navistar went with the "Chevy" way of numbering. Makes sense to a point, the pistons (and cylinders) are numbered in the order they're installed on the crankshaft, one in front, eight in back, alternating sides as they go back. Ford always labels their motors passenger side front to back(1-4), then driver's side front to back (5-8).

Different way of doing the same thing.

OP, good question!

If you look closely at the block, you will see that the passengers side cylinders are slightly ahead of the driver's side cylinders. This is for the cylinder's position on the crankshaft. The rods for cylinders 1 and 2 are next to each other, and 1 is ahead of 2. Simple really.
