I had my truck in for a repair at the dealership and they do a checkout of the truck and give you a report of all their findings. One of the things I saw was battery #2 was @ 550 CCA and battery #1 was @ 750 CCA.
Their comment was that battery #2 might need replaced.
How can you tell which is #1 and #2? I didn't see this until I had left the dealership. I figured someone here would know for sure.

Thanks,

battery one, is i believe the passenger side (close to the starter). it has the cable extensions (double ended terminals) that run over to the battery on the drivers side.

and if one is dying or weaker it will have a tendency pull the good battery down to the weaker ones level of readiness.

and bit you when you need it most like a cold morning.
most will recommend you replace them in sets,

Yeap,

If you need to replace one, the best method is to replace both like TBAR said ;)

I am sure the other one will be on the way out soon!

My original Motorcraft batteries are a couple months short of 5 years old and within the past couple weeks they were getting sluggish in the mornings cranking the engine so Tuesday I replaced em before it gets too cold and the engine won't fire at all :sweet

Look at the top and read the CCA. The one that is 750CCA is battery #1 and the 550CCA is battery #2. ;)

Like posted above replace them both. When you only change one battery the old one will drag the new one down.

By the way a 750CCA amp battery is not really enough and the 550 is totally inadequate. Get a minimum of 850 or 875 and 1000 would be better. I prefer Motorcraft batteries myself. My original set out of my 96' are currently in my 75' plow truck and are still going strong even at 10 years old. I installed a new set of Motorcraft's in the 96' a couple of years ago just for peace of mind.

My original batteries lasted 5 years. I was cleaning the battery terminals and noticed the little green light on battery 1 had turned to red. I looked at the little light on # 2 and it was half red and half green. I replaced them both with duralast batteries and boy can I tell a difference in the way it cranks.

Oh yeah, you never realize how bad it has gotten until you get new batteries in it...

By the by, these things really eat batteries like it is going out of style. They just put such a big load on them all the time, what with 140 volts for the IDM, glow plug amps, etc....
