What would make an 03 6.0 Turbo Diesel engine compartment all oily?

Good afternoon, first of you will have to firgive me I am a bit of an FNG when it comes to diesel f250s. I just bought one and there seems to be oil and dirt all over the engine...is this common???does this come from valve cover gaskets???any advise would be awesome!!!

Welcome to SDD. I would guess valve cover gaskets, but it could be any where. These engines are NOT known to be leakers, but any engine can spill its fluids.

I noticed that my engine develops a thin film of dirty oil over time, something like what you describe, and i tracked the problem down to a leaky hose on the power steering/ power brake cooler AND a small leak in the tranny cooler line right where it goes into the radiator. must have been leaking down, catching the wind when driving and spraying up into the engine check under the radiator in the front for any wetness.
