Hey all,

I’m looking for a little insight on 6.4 vs 6.7. I’m in the market for a used F350. Bought a new camper and my F150 I currently own came up with an unexpected problem while towing. Mechanic says get rid of it so I figure upgrade to a diesel. I’ve owned a couple 7.3’s but don’t know much about the new engines other than specs and info I can pull off the internet. So I’m looking for real world experienced driver comparison here. So I’ve read the 6.7 is supposed to be the new golden child of the powerstroke family but have heard of a few issues. And I know the 6.4 has its own issues but I can find some 6.4’s for pretty good prices. One thread I read on another diesel forum said a high mileage 6.7 is better than a 6.4 any day. Maybe just one guy’s opinion but he had a lot of agreement from other members. Any thoughts and suggestions will be much appreciated.

Thanks
D

My best friend has a 6.4, deleted, aftermarket exhaust and it has been doing great. They tend to be great until they aren't. I have talked with diesel techs that tell me the 6.4 is just a timebomb. If you get a good one then great but how do you know?? Personally I would take a deleted 6.0 before a 6.4. I believe the 2014 and later 6.7s had the bugs worked out. Again, I don't have personal experience other than the 6.0 but I'm not one of those "that trucks sucks" guys without having some personal knowledge or doing research. If it was my money I would look for the right 6.7 at this point. Might find one already deleted, too. Good luck.

Thanks bro. Since my post I’ve talked to a couple diesel mechanics myself who said the exact same thing. Stay away from the 6.4 bc you never know. Thanks for the help.

Why did the mechanics say to stay away for the 6.4s?

Part of it is the regen mode raises temps so high that number 8 cylinder can go into meltdown. I think there were other issues related to the same result. I don't remember all the details. Factory exhaust didn't get enough heat out, either.
