I am looking at getting a 03 with the 7.3 and it has the 6SPD in it. I am going to be pulling a 5th wheel camper with the truck. I like a manual for pulling over the auto in a ford, what I am wanting to know is there or has there been any problems with the manual in the fords, and is the drivetrain durable..

I love mine. It is so awesome to have a true overdrive with 3.73 gearing, and still have that low granny hole to get 'er up and running when you have a big load on. Fuel economy is pretty good.

The only gripe I have (and it is a pretty small gripe, not that big a deal) is that the gap between 3rd and 4th (2nd and 3rd if you go by the knob, but what does the knob know??? ;) ) is pretty big. That becomes a problem when towing heavy at first, but you'll learn to deal with it after a couple days. The worst part about the 3rd-4th split is engine braking. There are several hills around here that i like to take at about 30 -35 mph going down, which is right in the middle of the gap between the two gears. 4th won't keep it slow, and 3rd is running darn near at redline.

So i fixed that by wiring up an exhaust brake so 4th will hold it at 35 and life is good.

Earlier models (like mine) had troubles with clutch fork release arms braking, and shift forks bending and binding stuff up. It doesn't cause tranny breakage, but it stops you until you get it fixed.

That said, the 03 you're considering does not have that problem, since Ford fixed it in the 2001 MY pickups.

So, my take is that the ZF 6 is the best light-medium duty transmission out there. They don't break, they just don't. They run forever, flwlessly. :sweet

Hearsay is worth...:2c...real life experience worth alot more! I'm sure the original poster would rather hear it from the horse's mouth.

mxrider,

Like Hoss said the only real draw backs are the split in 3-4 shift and the "stupid" knob.:p To take care of the split you just have a learn what to run it up to. The 2003 should have the updated fork.

Only other thing I can think of is once you add some power via chip or programmer, you can slip the clutch. I would slip the stock clutch at half track on occasion when I was around 300hp. Towing it never slipped but I detuned for that. The ZF6 doesn't really like fast shifts, I think my synchros have about had it with me. Last year I put about 80 trips down the 1320.

I love my bolt-action tranny!:burnit Great fuel economy and you can choose where you put the engine RPM wise.

got a 6 spd in mine, I would never buy a auto unless I was one legged and un able to use the clutch. I tow 8500 lbs frequently with it and it is awesome. my clutch slipped on me once I turned the power up a bit, but I put in a LUK clutch set and it is solid now.

And I have an automatic with 185,000 miles on it 90% towing without a problem. I prefer to be shiftless.

I love my ZF-6. I've never used granny/1st, and with up to 10K trailer weight I've never slipped the clutch....it walks off in 2nd gear w/3.73s. Only complaint I ever had was scratchy 2nd to 3rd shifts which I learned to correct by just staying in 2nd long enough to get rolling and then pull 3rd gear (800 rpm).

My buddy Larry has an '04 identical to my truck except he's got the dual alternator 6.0 w/auto and FX-4 option. Both are bone-stock. Because of the BS 2nd-3rd shift dealio he can pull me out of the hole, but I gain on him in 3rd and can hold my own afterwards. Really pisses me off that I can't run him down.

I may go to a chip and injectors because of that.:D

Thanks to everyone for your input, I have another question bare with me on the questions I have please, I was wondering about the thoughts on an 03 250 sd with the 6.0 motor? The reason I ask is my dad owns a body shop and that is the rout I am going to go to buy a truck, this being, the truck will have a salvage title and I will no longer have the warinty. The price I want to spend seems to be giving me the option of witch motor is in the truck. I have heard to stay away from the early 6.0's I would like to hear your inputs on this.
I am not sure yet about the truck I had a question on that started this post, it was hurt fairly good and I dont know a price yet, but there is that 03 setting there for 13900.

I just recently purchased my 03 7.3 stroke. I asked this same question to a friend of mine who is a diesel mechanic and other people that know a lot on diesels. They all told me to stay away from the 6.0 because of all the problems, especially with the early ones. But who knows you may not have any issues.

I would be concerned without having a warranty with all the bad things I have heard about the 6.0s. I understand what your saying about the price, I just hope that with you trying to save money on the front end it doens't come back to bite you the a**. I am no diesel expert by any means just telling you the responses I got when I bought my stroke.
Good Luck in whatever you decide to do.
