Randy, the next time you have the boots off spray the inside with hair spray before sliding everything together. It should keep them from popping off again.

Good advice on the hair spray for the boots. I've done that before but not since the work was done by the outside shop. Holds the boots much better.

However, the saga continues as the truck continues to fall apart around me (or with me!). The truck started blowing white smoke again a couple of weeks ago like it had a year and a half ago when my EGR cooler failed that triggered all the work replacing the oil cooler, etc. Consumed more than a gallon of coolant in the past 2-3 weeks. Replaced the EGR cooler with the BPD unit back in Feb-2015 to hopefully be done with EGR issues. Since I'd had a shop do all the head/stud work a couple of months ago, I took it back to them thinking maybe an issue from that effort. They are telling me now my BPD EGR cooler has failed and they found coolant in the EGR valve. From what I read, that's pretty rare with BPD coolers. Called BPD and have to send the cooler in to them for inspection to confirm and get a replacement. So I get to tear it all down again this weekend (instead of 8 more hours of labor at the shop). In addition, I have a new glow plug code (#2 cylinder) and my clockspring just failed giving me an airbag light. Oh, and the starter started hanging up intermittently in the past few weeks too. I keep thinking eventually I'll catch up with all the issues but doesn't look like it's gonna happen before it bankrupts me :). The last 20K miles have been a disaster with this truck. Wife and I are getting tired of throwing money at it and may finally cut the cord (with her permission even) once all the current issues are dealt with.

Starting to eyeball some 2013-2015 replacements. We'll see what happens.

Been there done that. Eventually the nickel and diming costs as much as a replacement vehicle.

Finally decided to save a few bucks and do some maintenance myself. It's not that I can't, but I wanted the records at the dealer in case something came up for the warranty. The fuel filters definitely were easier than I thought they'd be. I didn't even need a wrench for the one in the engine bay.

Got the Denso "knock off" $103 Amazon starter installed today. Holy cow it turns fast. I'm wondering if it's too fast. Old starter failure...2 of 3 mount bolts in place, each backed off 1/8" or so...No wonder it croaked! 210k....can't complain.

Alternator yesterday. On Friday I took about a 2.5 hour round trip drive. Noticed my voltage kept dropping. Battery light never came on. When I got home I checked the batteries and alternator with a dvom, batteries were at 11v. Alternator would sit at 0, jump up to 18, down to 14, 0, 15.
It was a reman Motorcraft from orielly. Had the "ultima" sticker on it. Well orielly can't even get a single alternator for my truck anymore.
Didn't want to get one online, because I don't like the downtime waiting on shipping. Especially if I have to warranty it.

Changed out the AFE dry Air Filter today, with it's squeaky clean twin.

Soaked the dirty one in warm soapy water for 4 hours, as usual.. still amazes me on how much fine silt get filtered out. Bottom of the deep sink had a layer of Mud.. after the soaking.

Big Joe, soap and water? My AFE filter "requires" the cleaning solution then the oil. That sounds tempting...

Yep.. Found them on Amazon.. Never did get right with the Oil & Cleaner thing. These have way more media surface than OEM, and soaking them in the warm soapy water is snap. Back flush, air dry.. done deal. I change then out June & January-ish.

Well I had to do the injector replacement thing. Had 4 going in and out, so I replaced all of them. Found a place that had a really good deal. www.AccurateDiesel.com and my new best friend John in maryville TN for doing the work. 6.0 and 6.4 are all he works on.
