i've got a really weird problem with this truck im working on, its a 2000 f-450 auto trans 2wd federal pcm.

ok well, it drives just fine but does not produce more than 10psi wot. idles fine. but after i drive it hard for a couple minutes it acts like it wants to die at idle and no power at all, i can be flooring it and now i am only making like 1-2 psi, will barely go 10 mph. so im thinkin maybe boost leak. if i let the truck sit for like 20-30 min it will drive just fine again until i boost it hard.

the only code it is throwing is low boost pressure i cant remember but i think it p0247 or something.

i have taken off all the intercooler boots and cleaned them, they look good, no holes or rips anywhere. i installed the pipes and still same problem, i also cleaned the y-pipe boots. i have been spraying brake parts cleaner around the boots and manifold plenum and nothing, no change in rpm. i also checked map sensor hose and put new clamps on hose. i tried another map sensor and also tried driving it with map sensor disconnected and still that same. i check my fuel pump, i dont think its related but i dont know what else to do. the fuel pump with key on engine off was showing like more than 100psi so that cant be good, so i switched it with another fuel pump off another truck i have here, and this one puts out 65 psi. i installed fuel pump and took it for a test drive and still doing the same thing. so i switched the pcm off the other truck but that didnt work because the other truck is a manual trans.

i have also tried wiggling wires to the valve cover harness but i think that connector is fine, there is no other codes except for low boost. new fuel filter was installed last week. is 10psi stock psi for a f450? on my f350 i get like 19psi.

oh and i checked the exhaust crossover pipes and there is no soot on there, but i noticed that there are two bolts broken off on the turbo exhaust side right next to the two bolts for the pedestal. and there is a little bit of soot there, could that be my boost leak and the no power at all/idle problem? not not sure if there is boost there in the middle section of the turbo, maybe just the shaft that spins there? im going to try to take a pic of the turbo bolts that are broken.

if anybody has any idea what this could be please help me, i have been trying to diagnose this for over 14 hrs now

Need to look closer at the turbo and the two broken bolts. There should not be soot there. That a really good chance that the problem. If the bolts are broken and there in the deck your going to have to do a tear down.

You have an exhaust leak before the turbo and if it is not getting full exhaust pressure and flow, it will not make boost. Garbage in garbage out. Fix everything you see wrong and then check all of the boots on the intake plumbing. You will find it.

thanks guys.

i pulled the turbo off and the two bolts are completely broken off in there, and one bolt on the bottom is loose like halfway out. lots of black soot.

can i take turbo apart and put back together without balancing or should i send turbo to shop.

i just need to get those broken bolts out and put new bolts. it might be really hard though, because of all the heat.

You can dissemble and reassemble the turbo without needing anything balanced, as long as you don't do something like try to reshape the turbo wheel. Bearings and seals are OK. Have fun easy-outting the broken bolts. Soak the broken ends in Kryoil or some other good penetrating oil.

i removed turbo, actually there were no bolts in there. i put all new bolts and put locktite on them. reinstalled everything and took it for a test drive and it does the exact same thing.

i forgot to mention before but when i am at wot and not making any boost i can hear like a noise, kinda sounds like wastegate fluttering real fast.

what do u guys think?

I do not profess to be the 7.3 expert here. Others, like Big Joe can give you advice. Good Luck.

check the wastegate arm to make sure its connected. did anyone mess with it to change its settings?

did you check the intercooler?

make sure your vband clamps are on correctly.

make up a pressure tap with a 4" pcv cleanout reduced to 1/4" pipe threads and install a $10 regulator to pressurise the intake system, disconnect the air cleaner and put in the test plug. just crack the regulator open. use less than 5psi if you can.

DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT JUST PLUG THE TEST PLUG INTO AN UNREGULATED SUPPLY. YOU WILL F-UP YOUR TURBO AND CAN BLOW CRAP INTO THE ENGINE.

you will get a low whoosh noise where the air will escape through any open intake valves.
