Scot that is a very nice and easy way to winterize your cabin/house in the U.P. The only flaw that I saw was in the third picture. It was that bottle of drain-o / acid crap. People always are dumping that worthless crap down the sewer that is clogged and all it does is rot out cast iron lines. Then we are called to unplug the sewer and get acid all over our cable making it brittle. Sorry about ranting, but I felt the need to. Your engineering is wonderful.

I've had my share of off topic rants :sly I think that stuff is just leftover from grandpa. We are all PVC now but thanks for the tip.

I forgot to mention that we drain our pipes in the winter. Open drain valve under the house then open all the sink and shower facuets.

Gravity does the rest.

what about waste water and toilets? did yal just dig a hole or install a septic system

Pre 1980 it was an outhouse for waste and a hand pump for water. When my Grandpa move up there in 80 he had the septic system done.

Septic is the only way I would ever do it. Can't imagine trucking waste out.

Thanks for all the replys guys!

I think we are going to look into drilling a well first. If that is too expensive, then we will probably go with the tank idea.

Either way we will probably get a septic system put in.

My dad's cabin has a 300 gal tank in the loft. All pvc piping. In the winter the whole cabin gets drained. He uses a 120v pump to fill the tank from the well when water is needed. We use a cheap 5kw generator for power. All of the plumbing has a slight down slope to a drain valve so that it can easily be drained. The importand thing is make sure there are no low spots in a line for water to accumulate. His cabin is in the Adirondaks of NY and sees some pretty cold temps
