Ok for all those out there that have read the instructions on how to change your Water Pump with the link on Diesel stop and have read through this forum and you are confused on which way to turn your fan clutch with that 1 7/8" wrench I thought I would help make it easier and I'll take some pics to post here. I was asking the question but decided to give it a shot and got it done myself.

If you are standing on your bumper looking down turn your wrench Counter Clockwise to losen. There that makes things easier. Also just in case there are some different threads out there like stated throughout the forum just look on top of your fan shroud. Mine says "right hand threads on Fan clutch" on a big red sticker. I'll be back later to post pics just for the heck of it.

Secondly I could not find the large 1 7/8" tool so I bought one off of ebay for 25 bucks. I felt stupid but I needed to get it done and I can never get up to the machine shop in time before they close after work to build my own tool. So if you can not rent one in town (I could not find one). I don't know the gauge of steel but you could easily make the wrench out of I'm guessing here so someone help me out....about 3 guage sheet metal. Just cut out the shape of a wrench about 12 inches long and with a 1 7/8" opening and you are good to go.

It is REVERSED THREAD. Standing at the front bumper of the truck, turn it CLOCKWISE to remove the fan. If you think about it, the engine will tighten it up as it runs.

See that is the weird thing. Mine was the exact opposite so I'm not sure if my thread helped out or not. Maybe that is why they posted it on the fan shroud itself. But I was wondering the same thing you think you would want it so it would tighten itself as it was turning so there was no way for it to come off. HMMMMMMM all I know is I had to turn it COUNTER CLOCKWISE to get it off.

Ford and all their craziness:tounge they are just trying to :stir up some trouble I guess. I have to get to the bottom of this.

Is there a year difference for the threads??? Or maybe a where manafactured difference?

I hate to hyjack my own thread with WP issues but I had another question. the only difference in the WP I bought from Napa was that the gap between the impellers and the WP. On the one I took out it was about .003 and the gap with the new one was larger than any of my feeler gauges but somewhere around .030. Is this going to a problem or is it going to have harder time feeding water through? That is a HUGE difference. Also I did not see Ford stamped anywhere on my water pump and from reading I think the old WP's used to not have the 2 peice intake and this one did. Need to tear it apart and see what the problem was as there was Zero shaft play.

i will look at mine in the morning. i just bought a new one the other day, but have not compared the two. since i will be installing the new one in the morning i will compare them and get back to you. by two piece intake are you talking about the metal piece that comes in on the top side of the pump that also connects to the rubber hose? oh yeah and my fan clutch is right hand threads... so counter clockwise when looking at it from the bumper.

Must be that time of year eh? Where did you get your replacement pump? And yes I'm talking about the intake tube on the right side of the pump that is connected to the lower radiator hose.

Also if anyone needs a core WP for some reason I have one. I'm thinking I did not have enough SCA in the Coolant. I have no idea when it was changed last and I never added any...never even heard of it until now.

By the way the job was easier than I thought. Only took me about 3 hours.

i got mine from oriely's. my new one also has a larger gap than the old one. i took the new one out of the box this morning and go figure... it was already broken. where the bottom hose connects to the pump was snapped off!!!:cussing: i went back and got another one and will have to change it tomorrow. it took me about 30-45 minutes to get the old one off so we'll see how long it takes to get back on.

on edit... i also have a core wp if anyone needs one. i don't think you have to turn in cores for wp's though. maybe if you get a reman. unit.
