Since my water pump was replaced this week, my water temps have not been over 175 degrees F. Ive driven about 500 miles on the interstate, four lanes and 2 lane roads. It still will not get any hotter. Outside temp was in high 50's today and it still would not read any higher on the SGII. The delta to the oil temp was about 10 degrees. prior to the water pump being replaced i was only running water and it would get on up to say 198 FWT.

Do you think the mechanic left the thermostat out or could he put it in upside down, is it stck open or is it just the new Rotella ELC?

Yesterday took a 12hr round trip, highway and city driving @ 70 mph my truck coolant temp was 184, with oil temp @ 174 on the way home (truck good and hot). outside air temp was high 40"s. Your temps sound good to me, do to the fact the thermostat clips into the elbow on these trucks it would be very difficult to install it upside down. you could drain a little coolant out of the radiator and pull the upper hose @ the thermostat elbow and look into the port the thermostat is visible if present. First I'd ask the mechanic what he did?

Other thought is: where does the SGII get those temperatures? My coolant temp reading is at a bypass filter, so I expect it's always a bit lower than at the thermostat. It is stock, and runs around 190 degrees (my 203 degree T-stat got accidentally removed on a water pump replacement and I've never gotten around to changing it)...but I have a different engine?

I imagine the SGII is picking it up from the sensor at the thermostat. Prior to the Water Pump going out I was running around 198 on the SGII. With coolant added now the best I got it to has been 175. If the thermostat was left out then there would not be anything to slow the flow of coolant to make the engine get to the operating temperature that it was designed to achieve. Straight was is a better heat transfer than 50/50 coolant is but that would make it run a little hotter than straight water.

I am going to go back to the mechanic and ask him if he left the thermostat out. Afterall he did put about 1/2 gallon to much coolant in and I had to get him to drain it back out.

Last fall my 6.0 didnt want to ever get to full operating temp, I pulled the thermostat and the aluminum housing was actually very worn where the steel thermostat is supposed to close against it and seal. It would never get quite all the way closed. Might be time for a new thermostat?

Unless he pried the thermostat out of the housing I dont think he could forget to put it back it. The upper hose connection is part of the housing. I dont think you can buy the housing and thermostat seperately.

Sure you can.

#3C3Z8575AA Ford Motorcraft Ford Powerstroke Engine Coolant Thermostat

I just took the thermostat out myself about a month ago. Should have replaced it then but it was a Sunday with no parts house open.

If he forgot to put it back in or if it is stuck open, I think that would explain why it will never come up to operating temperature. Is anyone running a hotter than OEM thermostat? If so what are the benefits of running hotter?

Several people run 203 * thermostats. Diesels like to run hot and run better when hot, within reason. If you change it, go with a 203* stat. :thumbs

Dieselsite.com has some good Gouge on it all Smoky. It talks about the 7.3's but the operational theory is the same ?

Joe

On Edit ? I've often wundered if running the 6.0's a little hotter.. would help with the EGR/OIL clogging issues ??? :dunno
