Well just a final update. Went to pick it up. On the last testdrive the mechanic noticed it was running a little rough so he decided to replace the turbo (im sure more led him to detemine it was the turbo). Anyways after taking it apart it was apprently destroyed and seized inside so now I have a new turbo aswell as EGR cooler. Lets keep the fingers crossed that everything else stays all well!

Cheers

SEIZED !?! man thats a new one...that would raise
further questions about the oil flow to the bearings of the
turbo charger...maybe he meant the VTG Vanes were
stuck.

Hey,

The ring that opens and closes the vanes were seized. Apparently thats the part that rusts when sitting and causes issues?

Cheers

thats interesting that they "missed" that...and fwiw its a referb'd
turbo <from ford>.

Perhaps the dealer doesnt know theyre SUPPOSED to try and recondition
it FIRST...personally id rather have it replaced but ford has apparently
told dealers to recondition it and if that doesnt work THEN theyll replace
it w/ a rebuilt unit.

Hey,

I think they just replaced it ( the refered to a TSB on the sheet) because the fins of the turbine where practically gone. I don't know if thats a replaceable part or not but they just figured a replacement turbo was the best option. It runs like a champ now!

the FINS were gone ??? on the EXHAUST side ???

well that would be why they didnt attempt to recondition it.

if the fins were "gone" on ANYSIDE its typically from foreign
object ingesting....as rare as this typically is, its usually on
the intake/compressor side from running w/out a filter or
something getting sucked IN To the turbo.

simular situation on the EXHAUST (turbine) side...but that
would beg the question as to HOW OR WHAT was
injested...on the exhaust side it would have to be something
coming outta the engine (or a pyro probe having broke
loose...which i havent heard/seen yet)

turbo-plumbing.gif

90 % of all turbocharger failures are due to the following causes:

- Penetration of foreign bodies into the turbine or the compressor
- Dirt in the oil
- Inadequate oil supply (oil pressure/filter system)
- High exhaust gas temperatures (ignition system/injection system)

Hi,

It was the exaust side. They said if it was the intake side id be screwed as far as warrentee is concerned. They said often people run K&N air filters and the turbos are not warrenteed because of the dirt the filter let through and "dusted" the fins. Anyway thanks for the info!

Cheers

Do you have a pyrometer on the truck? Like Bush is saying, it's pretty hard to destroy the exhaust side because there really isn't much there to grenade the turbine with. Other than extremely high egt, in which case, your pistons and valves are probably about cooked as well. Unless it lost a bearing and it started chewing on the case, but I'd think you'd see smoke, and hear a lot of really bad noises from under the hood.

Would it be possible to get a picture of the dead unit?

Hi,

No pyrometer but I havent had the truck that long. Apparently it had the headgaskets done last july or 40,000 KM ago. What also peeves me off is the new turbo and fixed exaust leak didn't fix my problem of the engine going quiet. Its got to be a bad EGR or maybe its just normal lol. Unfortunatly not possible as its been sent in to ford for the warrentee.

Thanks
Jeff
