Hello,
I'm new to this site and am looking for input on how to remove the vacuum pump on a 97 diesel 7.3. Also, I understand the first step is to loosen the tensioner, but not clear on just how it moves out of the way so belt can be removed. Sure would appreciate any support. Thanks

Welcome Bolthead!

I dont have the answer to you question in front of me. Maybe one of our other members will chime in soon. If not I will be able to look it up for you after we get home from the fireworks tonight.

The tensioner is spring loaded. Move it and take off the belt. Now just loosen the bolts that hold down the pump. Basic stuff here. And welcome Bolthead.

Take the belt of as Dave said.3 bolts hold the pump on, remove the two easy ones then the last one is behind the pulley it must come out with the pump(the bolt is behind the pulley). To remove the pulley you will need a puller the auto parts store may have a loaner for you to use or they will do it for you.Make sure you put the bolt in the new pump before reinstalling the pulley.not a bad job at all.

Do you need a puller or anything to reinstall the pulley on the new pump?

Welcome Bolthead! To be more specific on removing the belt, take a socket (I forget the size) on a breaker bar or large ratchet to the bolt on the tensioner's pulley, and turn/pull it towards the passenger side fender. It's got a left hand thread so grabbing it by the bolt on the pulley and pulling it to the fender will release tension on the belt. :)

I'd have to go outside and look, but isnt it a big ole Torx?

It is I think on the tensioner itself (not the pulley on the tensioner), but I know I used a breaker bar and socket on the pulley to loosen the belt.

Hello bolthead... i just replaced my pump in my 96 350 yesterday! my brakes lost the power assist and i got tired of fighting it and playing my e-brake just to stop. i had 7 lbs of pressure instead of the usual 20. it's a very simple swap out and pretty self explaning. i used a prybar to remove my pully but i would not reccomend as it could damage your pully wheel. i have a question for you though, does the pully attatched to the pump have a retaining screw on it keeping the wheel from flying off? mine didnt have on and im wondering if i should get one to keep it from wobbling off.

Just replaced mine 9 months ago and 3 days ago!!!! UGGH!

Anyways,

This is how ya do it.

1)Get New Pump (Autozone has them for $105 or so)
2)While there get a Power Steering Pully Tool(You can loan it for $40, you get the money back when you return it, I believe the part number is #27031)
3)Take Belt off, Just Pull back on Spring Tensioner with a wrench to loose and slip it off
4) Unbolt the 3 Bolts holding the Pump on the engine
5)Remove hose from the pump
6)Put Pump on Table and get out the Tool Kit you Loaned, in there there is a CUP tool that will fit around the INNER part of the PULLY, you can screw down to remove it.
7)IMPORTANT!!!! Make sure to put BOLTS on new pump BEFORE putting pully on, YOU CAN'T GET the bolts on after the PULLY is on!!!!
8)Take NEW PUMP and transfer PULLY to it, in that same KIT is another tool to do this, you screw part of it in and you then with tighten it on it untill the PULLY is fully on the PUMP.
9)Put back on engine, put Vac Line on, Put on belt.

Alll is done, maybe 1 hour job if ya just going slow!!!

(first time i did it was like 5 HOURS!!! didn't have the right tools to remove and replace pully)

Hope this helps!

Did you figure that out before or after you installed the pulley? ;)
