Hi Guys,
I'm new here so this may have been posted alot of times so I'm sorry if it's a old subject.
I have a 04 SD F-350 dually w/6.0 diesel. I was about 20 miles out of Kingman, AZ. on my home to Colorado when I started to get some blue smoke so I pulled over and it stopped smoking. A mile or 2 down the road I started getting black smoke and by the time I got to the Ford dealer in Kingman it was just fogging the whole block. The service manager said it was pry a injector problem. They ran a computer check on it and said that I had 3 cylinders with low compression. They said they would have to tear down the motor to know forsure what was going on. They also said that since I had a hypertect module and after market air breather on it that ford my turn me down as far as warranty work goes. I said I had bought this from a Ford dealer in Denver with this stuff on it and I wasn't told that it would void my warranty. I said I needed the truck so find the problem and I rented a car and came home. Five days later they called me and told me that the 3 cylinders with the low compression had undersized pistons (a little over a 1/6 of an inch to smaller then they should be) and a blown head gasket, they said that that was something Ford should cover since it had nothing to do with the chip. :thumbs Two days later they called me and told me that Ford turned it down and that the failure was caused by the chip. :dunno My dealer here in Colorado has been trying to help and said since they didn't have me sign a wavier that they would stand behind it after doing all they could to get Ford to pay for it. But now seem to be getting a run around from them now too.So I think Ford will turn down anything it has anything after market on it. What gets me is the truck in the shop just before me had the same exact problem and Ford paid for it. This truck had a chip, 5 inch pipes and some sort of engine brake on it. I'm pry screwed. Are undersized piston a common problem? The Ford dealer in Denver said he gets about two a month with it. $15000 for a new one, damn!

Thanks for listening to my rant!

Floyd

me either
your chip will be the sticking point for ford.
if your dealer added it then they are in essence responsible for warranty if it is voided for "perfromance enhancing items"

WOW....1/6"= 0.167"......two words come to mind...piston slap!

That thing would have been a loub SOB with 3 pistons that small. I don't see how that would be common, I would try to get an oil sample to Blackstone to see whats in the oil. I would think it would have ALOT of soot and fuel in it.:dunno

As far as the mods and Ford....they warranty a stock HP engine IMO you play you pay. If you buy a vaccuum and send it to Tim the Toolman Taylor and have him tweak it into the Suck-o-matic that can pick up 100lbs+ would you expect Shop Vac to send you a new one when it blew up?:tounge Just because mods are dealer approved doesn't make them manufacturer approved.:2c

I was shocked when he told me about the pistons too but he said you could put the tip of a screw driver between the piston and the cylinder wall. It never used any oil, it was a little louder then when I bought it but figured it do to getting more miles, 81000. The dealer didn't put the after market stuff on but used it as a selling point, even told me that there was no need to buy the extended warranty because of the 100000 mile drive train warranty. The dealer in Kingman told me that if they didn't have me sign a wavier that it was equiped with after market parts and that it would void my warranty that it would be up to them to fix it. I didn't sign a wavier.

I dont' know what you paid for this truck, but I'd certainly stop payment on it if it isn't paid off. I'd be at the other dealership where you bought it asking for the salesman's head and the general manager's head on a platter. Dude, you got screwed.

Something smells in Denmark. 1/6 of an inch???? They do not make pistons in one sixth inch increments. And why would ANYONE put smaller pistons into a motor? This fish stinks bad.

piston size is not impacted by a chip. if they are trying to deny warranty coverage because of an intake and chip they better prove they are related. Call a lawyer. Now.
