Thank you for your inquiry to the EPA Web site. Your request has been received by the Headquarters Information Resources Center Public Access Service, a contractor operated reference and referral service.

You asked about the changes because of the "2007 Highway Rule."

The Clean-Diesel Web site provides the following response:

Owners of 2007 and later model year diesel-powered highway vehicles must refuel only with ULSD fuel. Owners of 2006 and earlier model year diesel-powered engines and vehicles may use ULSD or Low Sulfur Diesel fuel during the transition period. Only ULSD fuel will be available for highway use starting on December 1, 2010.

-----------------------------------------

The Vehicle Performance section of the Clean Diesel Web site states, "Engine and vehicle manufacturers expect ULSD fuel to be fully compatible with the existing fleet, including 2006 and earlier model year vehicles. In some instances, the introduction of ULSD fuel to older vehicles may affect fuel system components or loosen deposits in fuel tanks. As part of a good maintenance program, owners and operators of existing cars, trucks and buses are encouraged to monitor their diesel-powered vehicles closely for potential fuel system leaks or premature fuel filter plugging during the change-over to ULSD fuel. "

At our hub locations we are required by state law to have these tags, we already run ulsd in our trucks all it is for is the epa 2007, its mostly for class 8 rigs which now have some of the most complicated systems for reducing sulfer i talked to two reps, 1 from cummins and one from detriot diesel, they both said there engines are now set up to run ultra low sulfer and are meeting the epa standards. but get this the system on cummins is suposed to be so good but its not covered under the 5 year 250,000 warranty :dunno  . but anyways dont worry we have been running ulsd for about about 8 months no problems.

The EPA admits the new USD fuel may cause problems with the fuel system. -mad
