im kinda surprised ford isn't putting the new turbos in the 03's when they "break"

i think they are...but to the point you can replace all the turbos you want
but youll keep doing it over and over and over again if the tech
isnt diagnosing the right problem or "thinks" its the turbo thats
resolving the problem.

I thought there were numerous turbo problems on the 03's? I cant imagine mama Ford not having their techs properly trianed to the point of throwing 2500-3000 dollar turbos at a EBP,VGT,EGR issue? I mean I know that some really dumb stuff can happen at a dealership, but I would think that mama Ford would eventually say, whoa guys, its not turbo troubles.:dunno

you mean like CACKLE is normal :roflmao
oil leaks at the EBV, NORMAL
7.3 stuff and all

or

we dont have estimates on what you should get MPG wise, but 8 mpg seems to be the norm. so your engine is ok
sorry :D

if they properly trained their techs I would not have been told my roaring noise (EBPV) was the wastegate (note the year of my truck). They also would not have replaced my turbo because they couldnt figure out what else might be causing the noise and loss of power. This is a "repair" two local stealerships took a combined 6 WEEKS to fail to diagnose. I have no faith in dealer "diesel techs".

From my experience, Ford likes to just keep replacing expensive broken things instead of actually fixing the design flaw. I wouldn't doubt if the turbos ARE going bad and Ford says..." Keep replacing them, most will be out of warranty in a few years and all this will be behind us.":burnit I think they're doing the same with the injectors on the 6.0L. We'll have to wait and see if they change the design.-popcorn

ROTM. (Right On The Money).

it might be ROTM but these days thats a TERRIBLY risky
option...by the time 3/36 warrenty runs out the lawyers will
be cranking up their CLASS ACTION machine...and in this day
and age NO domestic auto manufacture and afford negative
press

im not sure there is any actionable problem. As long as they continue to replace the item and it doesnt injure anyone or their property, there is no actionable "damage". it wont become a warranty fight unless they refuse to replace it.

repetitive fixes though would still be really bad press and destroy customer faith.

My buddy Hot Link just had the turbo on his 03 replaced two weeks ago at the local stealership in Hillsboro, TX. It runs good now:burnit but it took them 3 days to get it done because there was not any turbo's in Dallas at the warehouse.:thumbs

Well, speak of the devil. On a 2.5 hour drive home from NY last night pulling a 2k lb utility trailer, my turbo went out--at least I think it was the turbo. Starting getting a "spinning" sound with no power (sound of spinning was equivalent to the boost), some crackling and popping, no more than 2psi of boost, and lots of white smoke. At first I thought the exhaust had come loose and was rattling on the frame, but no such luck. Restarted several times and the problem persisted. The thing that gets me is I never got a CEL.

It's at the dealership right now; they haven't had time to look at it yet, but based on my description they're thinking turbo. Since this will be my FOURTH turbo, can they replace it with an 04 or 05 turbo or is the 03 the only one that'll fit? I'm at 80k right now, so it's under warranty, but 100k is approaching fast and my faith in this trucks reliability is starting to fade...

Bushpilot, FWIW, this problem seems a heckuva lot more like the turbo than the problem I was having when they replaced it last time. The sounds were coming right from the turbo area under the dash.

My trouble with turbo

bushpilot said:
my question would be is it REALLY the turbo...'specially on
such a new truck...what was the truck doing that caused
you to take it in ?

BUT....they should be able to pull the old turbo & install a new
one in 1/2 a day at the most.

Delivery date on my 2004 F250 4x4 Harley truck was 04-12-04. I noticed a "GROWL" start when I accelerate onto the interstate. At first I assumed I had a wheel bearing going out. Went to local/selling dealer and was in formed that it was the turbo I was hearing and that it had to be replaced. Work was started and after approx. a week later was called by dealer and informed they weren't getting the new turbo from Ford and that it might be to my adantage to call Ford direct. I was informed by Ford not much they could do, but the new turbo arrived the next day. At this time the truck had 23,366 miles on it.

The truck now has 40,000+ miles and I'm starting to get the "GROWL" again.

Note: At the time of repairs the mechanic told me that my truck was the eighth truck he had done. Also the trouble was with what was called a gate valve.
