Hey everyone,
My turbo is junk, so now I have an oportunity to upgrade. I am looking at the BDP Dominator 66, but on Ebay I found Ron's Turbo service, and he has a turbo with a Banks AR1 housing and wheel for quite a bit cheaper than the Dominator 66. I am only planning minor power upgrades so I was wandering if the Banks turbo would work OK. Has anyone had any experience with the Banks turbo from Ron's Turbo Service. Any help is appreciated.

welcome to the site!

i dont know anything about ron's turbo, but one thing that turns me off about the D66 is that it still uses a stock cartridge, so is it really an upgrade/worth the extra money???

to accurately answer your question we need to know what you define as "minor power upgrades"

In my book that means Chip, Intake Exhaust, maybe intercooler. And that's it.

Given those modifications you'll be happy with either the 0.84 or 1.00 AR exhaust housing stock is 1.15 so you'll get a bit faster spool though will run more pressure under normal driving conditions. If you're not going to do injectors then you don't need a turbo upgrade.

I plan on in the future doing tranny saver or stage one injectors, chip, and an exhaust when I change the turbo. The shaft on my current turbo has so much
play that the turbine is rubbing the housing, so I figured I would get a turbo that will push more air for future upgrades. I've had this 95 since day one and now I want to start playing a little.

sadly unless you have money to spring for them (injectors & chip) now I think you'd be very unhappy with the D66 turbo for normal driving.

The 1.0 AR housing with injectors will work but you will have to really watch your EGT's and boost carefully. After reading his ads on ebay I would strongly suggest that you hang onto your current turbo for the exhaust housing for the $110 that he'd refund for a rebuildable return. Then you can have the quicker spool of the 1.0 or 0.84 housing today and swap it out for the 1.15 off your current turbo when you get injectors.

I finished mine last weekend, haven't run it much, but it seems a lot better than the stock one. Ordering from Rons was a good experience, it came within a couple of days, and it had all the o-rings and the exhaust gasket.
Have fun pulling the turbo, the back bolts are a bear to get out. I broke multiple tools in the process. I was wandering if I was going to get them broke loose. You have to have a 10mm wobble 1/4" drive to get to one of the bolts, make sure it, make sure it's a quality one.
