Is there any real advantage to the turbo back exhaust systems as compared to the cat back systems when you are keeping the stock cat?

They flow better than your stock exhaust because most aftermarket systems use mandrel bent tubing where your stock system uses crush bent tubing. They are normally made of a heavier guage metal than what you stock system is. I would ditch the kitty if you are able to.
ALL of what Dave sez.. fer shur, but.. If yer guna choke it back down to go thru the stock Cat (?), you won't get the full efficiency of a Turbo back system.
Lota guyz cut the Cat out, but keep it.. with adapters.. you could re-add it if you needed to
a FULL 4", mandrel bent, Turbo Back set up.. is the way to go.

I am looking for mileage primarily, although a little more power is always nice when pulling my 5th wheel, as long as it is safe on for the engine. I really dont want to blow a head gasket if I can help it. The reason I am considering keeping the cat for now is because of the waranty. After the exhaust I am looking at an SCT with an economy tune and maybe a tow tune.

You wont blow the head gaskets from running a turbo back exhaust with out the cat but you do increase the chances of blowing the head gaskets by running a tune in the truck but its not a guarantee that it will or will not happen. The 6.0 can have problems with the head gaskets stock and the only way to solve the problem is to install a set of ARP head studs I dont know what your 5er weighs but mine is 11k gross and my truck doesnt work that hard towing it. The other important point of a turbo back system that I forgot to mention is that it will reduce your EGT's (exhaust gas temperature).

I know the exhaust alone wont put any more pressure on the heads, I was commenting on the more power. If and when I blow a gasket I will go with the ARP's. My 5er only weighs about 7k and I dont have any problems pulling it either but more power is always fun to have

If your going to worry about your factory warranty and you know nobody at a local ford dealership then i would wait. At the dealer i was employed at in boston we threw every claim in the trash once a modification was found to be the cause. Plus as yooper stated the 6.0l can be a problem engine and your increasing this factor when you start adding more power to a stock engine. Choose carefully and good luck with your rig, keep trucking.

I guess it all depends on how deep your pockets are for repairs because head gaskets are between $1500 and $1800 to have done and its another $500 for the ARP studs. I bought my truck last November with 126K on the clock and so far I have replaced a turbo under warranty or it would have been $1800 and I just did two injectors for the low out the door price of $1302. Its your truck to do with what you want but just be prepared for a very large bill if you throw a tune in the truck and it goes bang some where in the middle of no where at midnight on Saturday night with the fifth wheel hooked to it.

This truck has only got 34k on the clock so I should be under the 100k engine warranty for some time. If I blow a gasket I hope it will be during this time. I should be able to find a dealer that would put in the studs if I provide them. But having said that my primary goal is to increase mpg, so if I can accomplish that with an exhaust system i will not get a tuner. Besides I am satisfied with the performance other than the initial turbo lag. This truck runs as well as my late 99 did with a chip, exhaust and intake except for right off the line. Once I get the 6.0 breathing its a monster.
