Hello,

I was running very low on fuel today and my 2002 7.3 PSD began to shake a bit like it was about to stall. I pulled in to a service station and filled up. After this, I drove about another block down the road before stalling out. I have checked the fuel bowl and it doesnt seem to fill when I turn the key. Any suggestions?

cycle the key a bunch of times but dont actually start it. its a freeby!

What he said.........usually that does the trick but if not you may have to prime it manually.

When I cycle the key with the fuel filter cap open should I be able to see the bowl filling up? I cycled the key about 16 times and it still wouldn't start. How do I prime it manually?

Pull the hose off the intake side of the pump...............connect a hose to it and drop it into a clean container of diesel.........cycle key(bowl should fill)........start engine. If the pump is working you will hear it whine under the drivers side door when you cycle the key.

With the cap removed you should see the bowl filling. If not. Check the fuse for the fuel pump.

I have seen three trucks that failed to prime......mine being one of them.

You have air in the lines between the pump and the tank that you are trying to pull vacuum on. If the line is completly dry the pump will not pull air very well.

On the other side of the pump you have pressurized fuel and/or air you are trying to push to the fuel filter and return to the tank via the bypass.

Sometimes the pump can't get a bite on enough liquid coming from the tank to over come the pressure trying to return to the tank.

Taking the lid off the fuel filter might relieve some pressure and allow the pump to draw fuel............in my experience filling the bowl only produced more pressure for the dry pump to over come.

When all else fails...........prime the pump like I mentioned in the previous post.

This may be a stupid question, but what is the difference between this and just leaving it hooked up to the fuel tank?

The shorter distance between the pump and the fuel........less air and vacuum the pump has to deal with before it get a bite on the fuel.
