OK I picked up the truck today and got the scoop. The issue he was talking about was back flow which he said shows signs that the motor is hurt. He took off the intake and grey smoke was coming out and also when he took off the oil cap it was coming out of there too. He said no telling how long the motor will last but it will get worse. What do you guys think how quickly should I get the money ready to rebuild. He did say its not the worst he has seen but its hurt. I don't tow anything at the moment so I'm not working it real hard. It has 140,000 miles on it.

I'm still kinda guessing here, but IF I understand what yer saying.. [He] is talking about Crank Case Fumes & Vapors that are coming out of the CCV (Crank Case Vent) then going into the intake. If that's correct, IF it's a very lite wif of grey smokey vapors, it could be normal for an engine with 140K on it. IF it's a Steady Stream of Grey=ish Smoke ? You may have a problem developing. IF it's a Thick Grey Smoke, you DO have a problem. That same would be true.. from the Oil Fill, with the engine running.

As Stroker said.. Watch yer Oil consumption Real Close. Go from there.

It's impossible to be Definite here on SDD on the Smoke or Vapor density so before you do anymore ? Get a second opinion from another local diesel mechanic.

Best I can do.

Thanks Big Joe I agree I can't really explain on the site its something that need to be seen. I will get a second opinion for sure. It is a light grey smoke almost like mist or fog. I think a 7,000 dollar Christmas bonus may have been a small factor in the guys advise if you know what I mean. Thanks for the help.

The DRW was bought at 120K miles and shortly there after found the air box cracked. After reading a bunch of posts about the subject started to get worried. Never done a compression check on the cylinders but it seems to run much like the 182K mile X and 250K mile SRW.

Put in a Ford AIS and it's pulled some mammoth loads to the dump and doesn't seem to use much oil. Hopefully it didn't breath in much dust before the air box was replaced.
