Transmission temperature

New to the forum,want to know what the trans temp should be.I have a new 2016 and it is running 203 when empty.Seems high to me,but dealer said this is normal.Any input would be appreciated.

I want to say mine is 190-200 when driving around town. I can't remember what it gets to when towing. Which means wasn't too worried about it. Wait until you see your coolant temp gauge moving past halfway. That's unnerving the first time.

Wow! Kinda high IMO.I know I have a different trans,but trans oil temp is what it is and 200 just driveing around town seems pretty close to the edge for oil oxidation.The absolute highest I have ever seen was 192,that was plowing snow on my (long) driveway.I have to throw snow over the banks so I am running25 mph and about 25# boost in 2nd gear (2600 +rpm).This is more severe than it sounds in terms of service.Pulling the 37' TH in 90 deg ambient,hilly terain,it runs 160 max at 70 mph,12-15 boost.In town with the TH,stop & go traffic I will see 180.If mine got to 200 I'd be looking for a place to pull out and cool down!

The newer trucks run hot it seems. I watched mine on the way home today and it hit 182 after a half hour commute. That was a mix of street and freeway.

The coolant temp will hit 240 on a hill during the summer when I'm towing. It usually cools down shortly thereafter though.

According to my Edge Monitor (no tunes) my 012 tranny runs between 160 & 180, empty. 170 & 200 towing. Goes up to 205 and holds pulling a local 3 mile 6% grade.. towing. Summer or Winter.

I have a Full Open aftermarket Mesh grill however. I think that helps overall temps some ? ECT is 192/195, EOT is +/- 200 or so.

I sure like this Edge Monitor.. I like to see ALL the engine/trans temps (and PSI's) fluctuate, in degrees.. with load demands.. instead of just >OK<.. with the OEM dash stuff.

Helps operating this 6.7 at it's "Sweet Spots" ?

I have had trans temps above 250 (F) when towing our 13,000 lb 5th wheel trailer. Petroleum based oils should generally be kept below 300 degrees but synthetic oils (what comes from the factory in the 6 speed transmission) can tolerate much higher temps with no loss of lubricity. Years ago we raced off road with an air cooled high performance VW 4 cylinder air cooled engine. We typically tried to keep oil temps below 350 while running full synthetic oil and never had a problem related to lubrication. Monitor it if it gets above 250 but don't worry about it below that temp.
