My truck has 138k on it and the torque converter seems to be getting a bit weak. I have never really pulled hard with it so I am hoping the rest of the tranny is fine. I am thinking of putting in a new 5R110 torque converter (they fit right?) and doing the full Transgo Tugger kit install. Do you think this would be worthwhile or should I just wait and do the whole thing?

Definetly cheaper to go through and replace the TC before it grenades the rest of the tranny. The Tugger kit is a good idea if you are going to do the TC since you have to drop the tranny to do the pump mod. There are several choices for TC's. Click the link in my sig to UCC.

Are you going to do the work yourself or have a tranny shop do the labor?

As far as I know the 5R110 torque converter is different than the 4R100 or the E4OD. I don't think that they work at all. Also I think that the flexplate/flywheel is a different design. Your best bet is to go with an aftermarket triple-disc 4R100 torque converter.

I am planning on doing the work myself. The TC is not real bad yet, I am keeping an eye one the fluid to make sure it is not putting out any junk.

I thought I remembered some people claiming they were running the 5R110 converter and it was basically drop in. I found it hard to believe so I think you are probably right.

My main concern is that the tranny is still in good enough shape to justify the new converter, I would hate to do this and then have something in the tranny go.

Mike, I take it you are using the UCC converter and are happy with it?? How much does one of those go for?

Thanks

That's the thing that sucks put in a new converter and then have they tranny pop. Then the new converter is going to be full of all the s--- out of the burnt transmission so your going to want another new converter. The thing that sucks is good converters aren't cheap!

Yes John, I have a UCC converter. Richter turned my on to Lenny and I think the converter was about $400, both Lenny and Richter claim that it will hold 350-400 horse no problem. Its not billet, just a extra heavy duty built unit that Lenny (or his guys) built. If you look at some of the other converters out there for the 4R or the E4 you will see that they are going for $900 and up........ way way up.
