I'll start off by saying that I generally do my own maintenance, but right now I am 1500 miles from home in North Houston, Tx in an apartment with zero tools and management that will have a cow if I even open the hood.

When I bought my truck (early '99 automatic) I noticed that it would leak a small amount of trans fluid from the dust cover when parked facing downhill. I never really considered it a problem. I have also had it puke a bit when I have had the trans up around 220 degrees.

So, earlier tonight I put my tuner in aggressive for the first time in a while and romped her a bit (temp never got over 200). Stopped to eat dinner and came out 45 minutes later to a puddle under the rear diff and under the dust cover. It was all trans fluid. and the entire rear axle from wheel to wheel and the gas tank was covered. The question is does that sound like the seal leaking big time or it just puked? I am hoping that it just puked and I plan on monitoring the level (I need to sniff it too). If it is the seal does anybody know of any shops in the area that they would recommend or have a ballpark figure on the cost. I really don't want to spend $1000 when the entire trans might go sometime in the future (from everything I hear I am lucky to have 190k on a stock trans w/ a tuner).

HELP!!

sounds like the front pump seal..
basically, what mine was doing; leaked a gallon a day if I was towing, other than that, just a few dribbles here and there..
I eventually got sick of it and sent it in for overhaul.

Thanks for the help guys. I checked the level and it was a quart low so I filled it back up and have been keeping an eye on it. I haven't had any problems since. :dunno

Would it make since that it was the torque converter overheating since it did happen when I was beating on the truck and was getting a bit of shudder from the trans? I've read in some other threads that when the converter overheats it will leak through it's seals. Once again thank you for the help.

if it's got a crack in it, when it's heated the crack can expand... but by the time it gets that far, you're going to be up at BTS
