Its time to change the tranny fluid in my 04 6.0 CC F350 SRW truck. So the question is do i replace it with Mercon SP like from the factory or do i go with synthetic? What are the advantages to either? And if a synthetic which brand and is it compatible with the 5R110 trans? Thanks David

MERCON SP only. If you are under the warranty, you want to only use Mercon SP. If you are out of warranty, you can use anything your heart desires. But stick with Mercon SP.

I just talked to a trans guy a couple days ago on this subject. His name is Jimmy Converse. He's been building transmissions professionally since 72. He has done magazine articles and done a lot of work with Allison and others I am told. He said from experience the only fluids he recommends are 1st Mobil 1 synthetic and then Ams Oil synthetic. Said he used Ams oil for years and then tried the Mobil 1 and noticed the Mobil 1 held it's pink color longer than the Ams oil. But couldn't tell any difference in performance, or wear on the trans itself. I run Ams oil because it is readily available in my neck of the woods. Both are spendy, but from what I have been told, worth every penny and outlast any other fluid. Supposedly. Just my .02 Hopefully some other guys with more experience will have some more input for ya.

make DAMM sure those fluids are APPROVED and COMPATIBLE
SPECIFICALLY for the TorqShift 5r110....

they might be ok for the 4r100 (mercon & mercon V) but most
of them are NOT compatible w/ MERCON SP

Here's the basic info from Mobil 1 copied and pasted

Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF
Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid

* Outperforms conventional ATF and meets General Motors' Dexron® III and Ford's Mercon® and Mercon® V requirements. Also recommended for Chrysler automatic transmissions.
* Fully synthetic formula provides outstanding resistance to oil breakdown and deposits under severe duty and high temperatures.
* Helps extend transmission life through excellent durability and protection.

Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF
For many GM, Ford and import vehicles. Recommended for use in vehicles specifying:

* Dexron III, Dexron IIIE, Dexron III-H
* Mercon, Mercon V
* Recommended for Allison C-4 and Caterpillar TO-2 applications
* Recommended for Chrysler automatic transmissions

Here's their link

The truck is at 75000 and new to me, so the safe easy thing is just drain the pan, change the external filter and replace with Mercon SP? I am having absolutely no problems, just trying to do the preventive maintance things. I just asked about the synthetic cause i know Royal Purple has a "special" trans fluid for replacement of the Mercon SP that is green in color, I just dont see it on there website at all
