If your differential or brakes were locked up (would be a bad thing too but....) your TC would still slip and not cause the engine to flat out die. The only thing in my skinny mind that can cause that is a locked converter.

Hi Doug and friends-- my local mechanic just left after dropping by here at the house and he found the emergency brake locked up the rear wheel and he rocked the truck back and forth in 4-wheel drive to break it loose and that did the trick. We took it on a 3 mile run to see if worked good and so the verdict is I need to replace a new emergency brake cable and possible a few minor things. That's a heck of a lot better than a tranny job, so I feel really lucky so far and really appreciate everybody's input on this problem. I'll keep you posted once I get a mechanic to work on it after Christmas. In the meantime, he said I can use the truck, but DON'T use the EMERGENCY BRAKE. hoorah!!! Rich

WOW, really? I haven't heard of that one before.

But didn't you say it was killing the engine also?

Seems like from your initial post I misunderstood "locked up" to mean "kill the engine". Funny thing on my 95 the e-brake was useless as was the rear drums, couldnt ever keep the things adjusted to where they provided any decent holding/braking power.

Glad it wasnt anything serious like a tranny issue.

Hi Big K and 95 Stroker, Sorry if my original post was misleading....the engine never froze up or stalled, it was the WHEELS that froze up and I couldn't move it forward or reverse...so my apologies if I mislead...I just didn't get my verbage right. But this morning I called a transmission shop where my father-in-law used to work and they told me it possibly could have been a rear end differential or the rear brakes locking up, so by talking long-distance with them, that was the scenario until this evening when my local mechanic did the diagnosis. Glad to hear that you are back on the road again. $200 or so for some new brakes is a lot better than a new tranny.
