Tranny not shifting

The other day I put the selector in the 3 position and the truck takes off in 3rd gear. I tryed the 2 position and it takes off in 2nd. It shifts normal in overdrive. Is this the way it's designed to work?

I read in a previous post that, that is the was it works. I had a 99 F-250 gasser that would start off from 2nd if I passed drive.

I know the c-4 and c-6 tranny's would start in 2nd for less wheel spin in slipperry conditions but a 3rd gear start seems strange.

That is really how it works. Now I can't explain Ford's thinking on this.

I called the ford dealer and talked to the service dept. and I guess it's one of fords better ideas. Well at least it's not broken.
