hey there, just got a 97 powerstroke with a E40D tranny (I Believe). Leaks tranny fluid like crazy from the front dust shield. I thought it would be a pump seal problem, but i heard the torque converters are notorious for the plugs leaking. Any advice?

I would say that you have a loose torque converter drain plug, blown/worn front seal, or a cracked torque converter. (I have seen converters crack/split near the weld and/or crack near the flex plate studs) I would pull off the inspection cover a get a better view. You should be able to get a better idea where the fluid is coming from with the cover off.

Its definitely a tranny leak, theres ATF all over my driveway. The weird thing is that it doesn't leak when you drive it regularly, but if you park it for a couple of days it just pours out. I took the dust shield off today and Im going to let it sit till it starts leaking again so i can try to narrow down the leak.

thats what im guessing, but whatever it is the tranny has to come out so im probably gunna go ahead and put a better tc and a shift kit in it. I fugure I might as well do it now so I dont have to pull the tranny later on down the road.

The Ford and silicone based replacement seals are too flexable and elastic. They expand and leak. Heat is what causes it. A high temp seal will cure the problem. I'd post a link for you, but I can't due to site rules.
