Now some of you are familiar that I'm picking up a new set of Eagle Alloy wheels this weekend and mounting BFG TKO 285's on them.

My question is will the tires require much or no balancing on the new 16x8 wheels as I don't want them to get scratched by the ugly wheel weights at least on the outside :dunno

:thanks Bill

I have seen (and had done) weights on the inside of the wheels for balancing. It should be fine.

I believe my truck came from the dealer with the weights on the inside too. Discount tire always argued with me about it though. I have the same tire in 285/75/16 and one has about 5 weights on it so I suspect you will have to have them balanced.

At the Discount I been going to they remove the old ones and install new weights each time, that process tears up the outside facing rim which I don't want.

I noticed on TFalk's same tire/wheel combo he has no outside weights.

The tires are going to determine balancing. My new Michelins had to be rebalanced after only 3k miles. All four wheels still had weights on them so I asked the shop how. They said the tires could've spun on the rims. :dunno

I have seen some GOOD shops use lead strips stuck to the inside of the wheel on high end wheels. I don't know what they use for adhesive. One Discount here does it the other doesn't.

Have them do the tape weights on the inside and a lip weight on the inside. This is how we did it when I worked at Discount Tire. You place the tape weight on the inside as close to the face of the wheel then you put a lip weight on the inside lip. This is a set up they can do all they have to do is change the program only one button. Just talk to them and explain you want no weights on the outside lip because you want to keep it nice and not nick it up with the weights.
Oh by the way nice rims that you got for the Ex Bill.

Consider this solution...
I have used Equal, not the sugar substitute, on several large tire applications. Its a powder typically used in large truck (18-wheeler) tires that balances centrifically(sp). It can be pumped in through the valve stem if the tire is mounted, or bags that break up inside the tire can be placed during mounting. NO UGLY WEIGHTS...PERIOD. It has worked well in my 35" BFGs, 35x14.5 Swampers and now my 37x13.5 Toyos. I've even made my own injection system (to save a little $$). There's only one precaution, use "dry" air to inflate and mantain your tire presure. Also, mount the tires using as little or no lube. Moisture is your enemy, as it cause the powder to clump and become ineffective. I have had 100% success.
Do a search on the internet, I think EMI produces it. You can call them directly or check their site for specific application quantities.
They also make a new "active" stick-on weight filled with the powder that you apply like conventional stick-on lead. Kind of big and ugly though.

CHP,

The Discount here in Grapevine blanced mine putting the stick-on weights on the inside of my wheel. Like it was suggested, I would call around to each store and see how they mount their weights. I'm sure you will find what you are looking for.
Hopefully, I will see first hand next week how they turned out!:thumbs
