average battery life is 4 years.

I have one motorcraft battery that is 16 years old and a pair that are 14 years old. I must be above average. The 16 year old is showing signs of getting weak but the 14 year old ones are going strong.

Well,
I picked up some Motorcraft batts today, the 850 to be exact for $126 a pop. I figure its a good investment though.

On a second note, I've never done reagular maintenance on batteries. Is there ant required other than keeping my teminals clean? What is the the sustance used to keep the terminals free of corrosion? Sorry for the newb questions.

Well I have 10 years on my 2000 SD. I did a rejuvination with a friends battery tender. I will attribute the longevity to the cool weather at high altitude. I have a Interstate Group 65 in another truck that has about 10 years on it also. When I lived in Los angeles I would get about 3-4 years on the same battery.

3 to 4 years is normal for our trucks. Anything else is gravy. Keep a close eye on them. I use a Battery Desulphator on mine.

You might give yer Batts a good Look See, every-time you change oil ? Cleaning the Posts & Clamps in the Fall & Spring.. or as needed by a visual.. those little Red & Black pads do a purdy good job of keeping the corrosion in check too.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but Dave, what does a battery desulphator do? Where do you get one and how expensive is one?

I think you can buy them at Wal*Mart. Has a can of spray to coat the terminals and 2 felt pads

I bought a set from Batteries Mart, I think. Made it 3 years. Forget that. Went back to Motorcraft. The only reason I bought them was because it was a Sun and the parts guys at Ford seem to want the weekend off.
