i keep getting "windows delayed write error"popping up on the corner of the screen.its been seriously slow lately also.i do a disk cleanup, manually delete the cookies and temp. internet files, defragment the drives 4 times a week.this computer is only about a year old.its a gateway 420GR.this thing was insanely fast when bought it.i know i have a lot pictures and music on it that would slow it down but holy crap has it gotten slow.

any ideas?full system restore from the disks(if i can find them)?i dont have a 3 1/2" floppy drive to save anything onto a disk.i guess i could burn it all on CDs but that will take a ton of CDs  .

do you have an old machine that you can connect to through a network cable? I keep my old machines to hold backup files. easier than burning a cd.

JIC you meant dying . . . :roflmao
Turn off windows error notifcation.

Go to Tools, Internet Options. Click Advanced on the far right.
In the browsing set, you should see one that says "Display Notification of Every Script Error". Uncheck it if its checked.
Also, click "Disable Script Debugging" to stop that, also.

Have you ran adaware or a similar program? If not do so.

rich-

do you have some sort of USB connected storage device like a hard disk in an external enclosure. like this one?

http://www.seagate.com/products/retail/external/index.html

there was some wonkiness with those for a while. windows not realizing they were sleeping or something. does it happen after you have something like you camcoder or camera plugged in for a while? unmount/stop-remove the device and reboot. should be ok until you add the remote storage device.

as far as backup goes- networked computer is best.

my suggestion- if you really have that much stuff on your machine, get a new HDD and install that as primary and reinstall on a clean drive. then add the old drive back in and move stuff over. not easy, but secure and effective.

Sounds like your hard drive failed, no software can fix. Is it still under warranty? If not get a new SATA (I assume it is new enough to be SATA) drive install it and start over. If you did not backup XP you will have to borrow a disk from someone and then use your Product ID. If you can get that up and going you can try to transfer the stuff off of the old dead drive. If you turn it on and off you might find that it will come up then transfer your files over as fast as you can.

not worried about loseing my files.it was mostly a ton of pictures and music.

not sure what kind of drive it was.i know it is 160gig hard drive.the computer is about a year old.not sure if its under warranty or not.i bought it from best buy but forgot if i bought the 4 year warranty or not.i keep forgetting to go to best buy to see if they can check to see if i did or not.
