Hey Man have any of you ever have a power stearing pump lock down an snap the fan belt. What would have caused this ? Can i put another one on without having this happening again. or could it the box that needs to be changed out. I may be the cause of the problem ,it has been slowly leaking fluid( the PUMP) and i have been useing power stearing fluid not ATF . Some time have the brain power of a rock Geeeeeee  THANKS

Palwackie,

You should be using ATF in the PS pump and not PS Fluid. But I am not sure if that could have caused it.

I have seen them lock up and throw/shreed the belt also, it can happen.

More than likley, you will need to change the pump before trying it again.

Also, Are you SURE it was the PS Pump that locked up?

Make sure you check all the pulley's before changing anything.

I would place a bet on the Vacuum Pump before the PS Pump ;)

if the bearing for the pump/impeller is gone it could lock up and burn
the belt up.

basically the belt turns a pully which turns an impeller (which moves
the fluid)...i cant see fluid locking it up (maybe if it was cement mix).

most power steering fluid is repackaged (aka higher priced) atf...
the viscosities arent gonna be dramatically different.

w/ the belt off the ps pump see if theres play in the pully...can you
turn the pully ? you could also have a bad check valve in the pump
but again i dont think that would lock the pully/bearing up.

hows it been steering ?

the leak may have been a sign that the pump need(ed) replacement

Hey All, The new deal today .Got new belt and pump. Pressed old metal pulley onto new pump( tight fit) Installed belt added fluid, purged air out. Cranked up made several reves back an forth on stearing . every thing seems ok .No noise ,NO leaks Stears great . Take out on the road for about 20 miles and 7or 8 turns. Back out from store , have a heck of a comotion going on under the hood . New fan belt chewed up in radiator , power stearing pump pulley laying on store parkingl lot . Pump pulley shaft blue an smoking hot. After getting home ,pull the pump back out shaft is ruined ,pulley is gone also.I can turn shaft by hand easy and it will shoot oil out 20 foot . I'M Really concerned NOW > ANY IDEAS

could an idler pully or another pully be locking
it up ?

what about the alignment ? is the best tracking
straight / lined up right ?

Hey Brush. I am away from the truck for a few days now .so being able to check things out will have to wait HOWEVER Ideas that can be concived for a fix are open.Wouldn't some thing have to keep that pulley from turning that pump .Like a pressure buildup or maybe something restricting pump flow . Is the pump a centrifical pump and would turn even if the flow was blocked off. How is that power stearing box gearbox or more imporantly how does it work? I really had no dealing with the stearing system. Your turn
