Have purchased, will install soon, the around the belt upper hose, the through the belt never seemed logical to me. I have looked at the 203 degree stat available through some of the web site sponsors but they seem pricey to me. Can I not go to my local parts store and pick one up for less?

No.

The stem length is wrong if you go to Napa/Autozone/et al and pick up a 203* t-stat there.

While you're at it, order a billet t-stat housing since the stock P.O.S. isn't worth saving. Photos of mine and the writeup I did for t-stat R/R are on the WIKI HERE .
