Thanks to all the vets on this forum who have served, and all the vets everywhere , including my late father who served in WWII in both the European and Pacific Theaters. He was not in combat, but was in the Engineer Corps who built temporary bridges in Europe for our troops to use, then they blew them up after crossing. When the war in Europe was over, they boarded the troop ships and were headed toward Japan, going through the Panama Canal, and were in Hawaii when the bombs were dropped. He ended up in the Phillippines. After the war, he became an MP and helped with the prisoner release, once guarding German prisoners in a rail car from San Francisco to New York.
