Summit tranny filter? Options?

Summit pn SUM-G4980 uses a Fram PH8A oil filter inline on the pressure side of the tranny line to filter the fluid. The only problem I foresee is if the filter gets clogged, the tranny loses flow (but we should be replacing filters every so often anyway). I am contacting Summit to see if it has an integrated bypass valve. Anyone used this method on their tranny rather than the Racor or Dieselsite?

Should I go with the Racor 6 micron bypass without hoses for $126, the Dieselsite 22 micron bypass with braided hoses and all fittings for $175, or the Summit for $31?

Gurus?

So you must not have read the thread, that's one of the kits I suggested. Does anyone have any objections/suggestions on the Summit kit?

You will get a bit of extra cooling with the DieselSite system. The summit kit doesn't say what the hose is, nor the connector threads. But instructions are pretty clear and it's cheap!

I could just buy some hose from an autoparts store and T it into the pressure side before the cooler. I guess what I need to find out is if an oil filter (I think PH8A is a SBF filter) will work on ATF.

The FRAM is rated at 18 microns according to summit: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=FRM-HP1

The dieselsite filter is 22 micron according to them, and in their Q&A:
Question: What is the micron rating of the OEM unit and why is yours a 22 micron element?

Answer: There isn't a rating on the OEM filter. If you had to rate it, according to Baldwin, it would be about 100 microns. It's basically a screen. 22 microns is smaller than the smallest clearance in the transmission. We could definitely put a smaller micron filter on the housing, but the result would be less oil actually filtered in each pass as more fluid would pass through the bypass port because of increased resistance to flow through the filter. Because the 22 micron element was small enough to keep the system clean and allow all the fluid to be filtered in a single pass, it was the perfect choice.

Which goes back to your first question, about no by-pass on the Summit kit. If all your fluid has to go through a filter, you don't want it to be a significant restriction. I guess I'd go with the bypass if up to me (but hey, I don't have either, what do I know)! :dunno Calling all gurus...-popcorn

So if the boss has a bypass check valve on it to allow fluid to bypass a clogged filter, would the Summit filter be a good deal? Or would it cause too much of a restriction in line pressure from being a full-flow?
