stupid question but i dont know the answer, my wife asked me this and i had no answer for here, why do some have them and others dont, what do they do???

they are either traction bars (used with a leaf spring suspension) to restrain the axle (rear) from twisting the leaf spring into an "S" shape, from where it snaps back to normal and causes the rear to hop, and things can break.
when used in front, or with coil springs, they are considered "link" bars. they form a triangle with milder angles to prevent fron to back axle movement, and are longer to allow the axle to travel up and down, without transfering the vibration to the body. a picture would be easier, i just can't draw on the computer. a shorter front bar, for instance, would transfer the force in a steeper, upward angle, on each bump, pushing up on the bottom of the frame, causing a rough, noisy ride.

they are devices to 'improve' traction. they limit where the axle can move to, namely limiting the front to back motion as the springs deflect and keeping it more up and down.
that and they look cool, and can add about 50hp and up to 100 ft-lbs of torque depending on what color you paint them

In the rear of the truck they are traction bars, look like the Fabtech ones I just put on my truck a few weeks ago, they help to prevent axle wrap, and wheel hop on lifted trucks.
In the front it appears to be a bar from a four link system, which is just the type of lift kit on the truck, it eliminates the leaf springs and shocks in exchange for coil overs. The 05 and up SD's have radius arms in this location, when lifted they are quite noticable, mine were replaced with Fabtech custom radius arms.

People have them added to their truck, normally when they have it lifted or race them, for the above mentioned reasons.
