strange surprise under the hood

opened my hood the other day to find this.....

any idea of what could have caused this?

May be that the locking mech that holds fill cap in failed or it vibrated out?????

looks like something got hot and melted it.

i found it in it's original spot.

and its just the top part of the cap

was it the cover or is the cap busted? was the oil tube sucking air?

just the top, the tube is still sealed

I've seen some plastics do that when exposed to gasoline, but other than that, I dunno, ya know?

Looks to me like a chemical reaction. What you been cleaning under the hood with? Oil additives? Set it on the battery upside down when adding oil(battery acid)?

Whatever caused it, it looks like you'll need a new 710 cap.
