Steering wheel slop

I had almost 4" of slop in my wheel. Adjusted the set screw on the steering gear and got most of the play out, but steering was noticably dragging. I promptly backed off the adjuster to the point the wheel turns freely and now have about 2" of slop.
I'm thinking it may just be time for a new steering gear. It does have a drop pitman on it and I know that's harder on parts. But is there an aftermarket steering box anyone can suggest that will hold up a little better?

It will have nothing to do with the alignment of the steering wheel. It only reduces the play between two gears.

hey guys...is the nut that you adust on top of the box and visible from looking at it from under the hood? I was looking around out there yesterday and I think I saw the nut, but didnt want to go turning things. Best way I could describe it...directly under my coolant filter. Is it an alan wrench head and then a regular nut under it?
