Would anyone have an idea as to what might cause your steering column to squeak and creak, when turned to the right and left. It’s as if it needs to be oiled or greased, but I see no way to do so. 97 F250 Crew
Thanks

NO Dammit! :D

Mine still squeaks and noone could ever tell me how to get to the bearings or if they can be serviced in some way. Im getting tired of the noise although it seems to get better when the weather is warm and dry.

If you take the wheel off, which I have never done, can you see the brgs? If so, can you get some graphite into them?

nope. you can only see the 3 pins that were what i tried first. THere is a large metal plate covering the rest that I could not see how to remove easily. Of course, I was only aiming for the pins last time I removed it so it is possible a closer inspection might reveal something.

Any idea if it would be a bad idea to simply squirt some silicone spray down there? There are a couple of small openings around that plate where I could stick a spray can straw.

If I am looking at my DVD right, there are 3 bolts that hold the top bearing to the column (after you remove the steering wheel). Remove the bolts and the bearing retainer (the cast looking thingy) and see if you can see the bearing. Don't get too wild with the spray as you do have electrical components down there.

Ok, I decided I couldn't take the squeaking anymore and took it to a trusted front end mechanic. I really thought the squeaking was coming from the column, but he found otherwise. It seems the sealed ball joint and sealed drive joint were both shot on the left front, as he showed me what they look like when they begin to degrade, signs of rust and loose. Few hrs later and out of the shop the squeak is gone and the handling is even better. For anyone else going through the same, I thought this might help. By the way I’m not an advocate of the sealed joints, so I requested the serviceable joints, so I can manage them myself. Thanks to all who responded.
