My oldest son has a 95 F150 and wants to install a spray in bedliner. Problem is he has some rust spots in the bed due to the usual scratched that a pickup bed receives. Will he need to paint those rust spots before applying the bedliner, or will the material in the bedliner "take care" of the rust?

He'll need to remove the rust with the proper abrasive material (sand it out) and then prime and apply the bed liner.

i know that with a Line X, or any of the other name brand spray-in liners, they will sand down the paint to a dull finish, so the liner will stick better.

so would the rust spots keep the liner from stickin mike?

Thanks guys. We didn't think about the sanding prior to the bedliner being installed, but that would be necessary to help the liner to stick to the bed.

i have seen step by step pics of what they do prior to spraying, and they actually take a power angle grinder and grind the paint down.

of course, the drop in liner people will tell you that to get you to stay away from spray in liners, and the spray in liner peolpe will tell you to stay away from drop in liners.

i went with the drop in myself, but kinda wish i had done the line - x spray in.

The rust will continue to oxidize under the liner. It will not stick and will make a bigger mess. You need clean metal in areas where there is rust.

Yes Wayne, youre going to need to scuff the whole inside of the bed with a scotch-brite pad (they make them to fit drills and angle grinders too) so the liner will adhere to the rough surface.

I think he's going to have it done by a professional. I wouldn't want to take on that job for his truck or mine. He told me yesterday that he has almost 192,000 miles on it (4.9 L I-6, 5 Spd), and it's still going strong. He wants to start "updating" it a bit and make it look nicer than it is now.

I had a drop in that came with the truck. I had to remove it when I had the fifth-wheel hitch installed. Now I'm looking at a spray on bedliner. Even with the drop in liner, the paint still got boogered up quite a bit.

yep, i had to have my hitch installed first, and then they had to cut out around the hitch mounts when they installed the drop-in lilner.

the one draw back to the drop-in, is that in the summer, it starts to curl up in places. i had to screw parts of it down to keep it from curling up real bad.

Stephen, that's why I'd never have a drop in bedliner. If I put in a sprayed bedliner, I'll have to take the hitch on mine (RBW Hitch) out first. Actually, it should be easy, the slide rails have four big bolts holding it in.
