Hey,

Today we were hauling our trailer (roughly 3500 lb landscaper) and all of a sudden I noticed the engine wasn't sounding right. Usually it has that hardcore chugging sound but whenever I came to a stop the engine would go much quieter then normal, still making noise but not the usual pinging/chugging noise. If I tap the gas it goes back to normal sound and then slowly tapers off within a minute. Idle stayed dead on 650 and was not changing at all. No check engine lights, pulled fine, lots of power. Eventually it went away but id like to know what it was.

Also I noticed a hissing noise coming from the lower part of the engine roughly where the firewall is. I was actually at a mechanic discussing other things and he said it sounded like some kind of vacuum leak. He is not a diesel mechanic unfortunately. Anyways any input would be appreciated.

Thanks
Jeff

intercooler boots leaking ?
cracked "Y" pipe (against the firewall) ?

the quieter than normal could be from the tow/haul
being selected...since it changes the egr & ebpv operation

Woulden't it not return to normal if it was either of these? Also I did not have tow haul on at the time. The hissing was heard more at start up and then went away usually.

Thanks for the input.

Cheers

Hmm I got the exaust leak fixed and it still hasn't fixed this weird noise. "Some times" the loud noise from the engine will taper off and go quiet for a couple seconds and it will either stay this way until the gas is pressed OR shake a little and then return to the normal noise and then taper off again. If ANYONE has any idea what this could be any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks
Jeff
