That extra cost will just be passed on to the consumer. There is currently a 19.2% fuel surcharge that is added onto most all regular freight rates to cover the fuel price increase and the base rate will go up when the truck prices go up. I am a trucker and I get tired of listening to the truckers sniveling about the fuel prices, they are not effected as much as you may think. The person paying to have the freight moved is the one that pays the extra.

Crumm i agree...theres a saying "a bitching man is a happy man..."
some just like to have something to complain about.

if any trucker is eating the increase in fuel and working at lower
profit margin...then theyre STUPID business people to begin w/ !

At 1st it may have been a cash flow issue but i have NO doubt anyone
in business quickly recovered the cash flow "loss" and then some...

You don't get it, do you? It is WAY more fun and sexy to tell the story like a bunch of "working class heroes" are getting trampled by "the man." ;) :D The fact is, shipping has historically been insanely cheap in America. It is now costing more like what it is really worth. Any trucker eating the cost of fuel (or the cost of his truck, has anyone ever heard of charging depreciation?) is a poor business man. Every business in the Spokane area involved with ANYTHING that is burning fuel has increased their rates and surcharges for fuel. That means that I pass that on to the owner fo the project, who passes it on to their overhead costs in their building depreciation, which raises the cost of goods or services that they produce, but by the time it gets to that level, to the point to where it is so diluted, it is virtually non-existant.

What I don't hear anyone B&C'ing about on this whole thing is the raising of the rates by the fed, raising the rates at which truckers can finance a truck, which in the end will cost them a BUTTLOAD more than 6K for a DPF. But guess what? Theyhave seen that before, and they charge rates commensurate with the prevailing rates, and are compensated.

Speaking of which, Volvo just came out and said their surcharge for the 2007 trucks will be $7,500 for the 16 liter engines. That is the most I've seen so far. So, I'm guessing that the 15K numbers shown earlier are Y2K syndrome.

Not to say $7,500 is not a lot of money, but it is half of what was projected in teh OP link. And when buying 100K worth of truck, 7.5K ain't much of anyting.....

Then the next time you need 3, talk to those of us who buy in bulk. The medium duty market has said 3500-5k across the board. And less fuel economy, more complexity. I'm not second guessing you, just may have a feel for the market. 07 pick-ups?? 3500-5k across the board. You'll see. Lets talk at a later date.

Where I work and the neighboring countys have been ordering Mercedes-Benz engines for our trucks as they have lower surcharges on them. My truck was ordered in Jan. and I won't see it until the end of Aug. We were told that because of the size of the catalitic converter the 07's will be harder to hang under body plows on. $$$$$$$

I only did a minimal net search on this and did not find any confirmation of the alleged surcharge. Can anyone find an official news release or is this more hysteria?

This is the only release that I can find from a company website. It just says that the cost of the equipment will go up due to more stringent EPA regs. The document is a little dated though, so things could have changed for the better or worse since it was written.
