Well, ive been chasing a whining noise from underneath that has been directly related to boost pressure (hear the whining around 8 psi) and then it turned into a sound thats almost like the turbo is surging, but its not. I've determined (or I think) the whining sound....which has ironically gone away since the weather has warmed up...is my passenger side up pipe seal leaking (would explain the exhaust smell in cab).

Drove for about 2 hrs today at 80+ mph, got to my destination and had already turned the truck back to stock...and start to notice a greyish/blue smoke from the tailpipe. I could revv it and it would come out more, almost missing out a bit (much like the continual issue ive had with revving it when the chip is on) but now it did it stock. EGT's have maybe been a tad higher (my guess is due to leaky up-pipe) and boost might not come as quick (again...up pipe) but other than that the truck has run fine. No CEL.

What do you guys think is wrong? Is my turbo about to grenade on me? Do I have a bum injector?

Update

Well...

After the episode I had, I was pretty sure my turbo was in bad shape, so I went ahead and took it in to my guy who installed my 6.0 tranny cooler and I have a alot of trust in.

In short, the turbo was shot. They said something at some point went through the exhaust side (piece of rust, carbon build up etc) and actually bent the exhaust wheel. When that happened, it threw the shaft off balance and just slowly but surely ruined the shaft. They also said that the wicked wheel is harder on it because it moves more air, and to be done right, the whole shaft should have been rebalanced when the WW was put on. Now, did the WW cause it? They said no. Did it help it along? Sure.

So, I had the turbo rebuilt and rebalanced with the WW on it. Obviously had to replace the exhaust wheel as well. They had to slightly machine the exhaust side housing since the wheel had rubbed a tad.

Since the turbo was going to be out, I knew I had a leaking up-pipe and the gaskets needed to be replaced. After doing some research and talking with them, the right way to do it is to replace the pipes with the International Bellowed Up Pipes because the existing ones are prone to leak again even if you replace the gaskets. This supposedly is the case because the pipe has actually deformed slightly to the point that you dont get as good of a seal. So, now I've got the bellowed up pipe...and they look good!

Also, I knew my glow plugs needed to be replaced so I had those swapped out. Since the valve covers were off, I figured with it having 150k on it, the injector o-rings needed to be replaced. I thought this might help with some of my issues of revving it and having it miss and belch out unburnt fuel as well as having an oily like substance on my bumper vs. pure soot. Im glad they pulled them because they said there were several o-rings that were nearly shot and others would soon need it. Other than that, they said the injectors looked good (from what little you can tell via visual inspection).

Soooo....its like im driving a brand new truck!:sweet It starts smoother, runs smoother, quieter, EGT's are WAYY lower and the power really seems to back. I dont have that annoying whining noise anymore (maybe a little but just because maybe I can hear the turbo now?), no surge noise, and the whistle is AWESOME. It almost has a hint of a 6.0 now, but obviously not the same.

All in all im happy, just thought I would share!

thanks guys.

i've actually got a positive outlook on it...i want things done right, and im in it for the long haul. plus...the extra stress on it aint gonna extend the life...so i knew that going into it. plus, i got out of there for just under 2500...which is WAAAYYY cheaper than the dealer.

what do you guys think about them saying something went through the turbo? seem plausible?
