We all know that black smoke is an indicator of overfueling, right?

What are other smoke/exhaust colors indicative of?

Like for example, mine has a bluish/white tint to it. you really can't see it expcept if you put a flashlight to it at night. When I start it up cold, it puffs out a little blue/white smoke, and then it goes away once the motor is running.

I've also seen grey smoke when people put their foot into their diesels.

Any thoughts?

not real sure about this, but when my EGR cooler went out, it blew out a white smoke because of the coolant going thru the exhaust.

and as far as the bluish smoke, i thought that meant an injector problem, i am not 100% sure, seems like i have heard that before, but i could be wrong.

someone with the right answers will be along shortly i'm sure.

very good questions tho!:thumbs

at work we had a ford 7.8 liter inline 6 in a L8000 truck and it was smoking blue/white on start up. Ended up having to rebuild the injector pump no more smoke.

In a diesel BLACK THICK smoke is a sign of over fueling.

in just about any engine, whiTe smoke is STEAM...and is a
sign of coolant or water entering the combustion chamber.

on a gasser...blue smoke is OIL...on start up (cold) its typically
a sign of valve guides (top end) oil leaking down onto the top
of the pistons.

on a gasser...blue smoke under heavy acceleration or letting
off is typically a sign of RING or cylinder wear (oil blowing by the rings).

black smoke on a gaser is also a sign of over fueling/rich mixture
but it typcially wont be as thick as a diesel...and will come w/
rough running under acceleration.

light brown sooty color under hard acceleration ... NORMAL
and if your IC is really full of oil you could get a bluish smoke getting on it.

maybe my explanation wasnt clear enough...maybe the smoke is
TOO think ;)

w/ the exception of the THICK BLACK smoke (over fueling) in
a diesel everything else would be the same as a gasser !

we all know a little white smoke during warm up on a cold day is normal,
but white smoke on a diesel could also be indicative of a clogged air filter.
i'm around diesel engines all day at work as heavy equipment operator.
