Not surprising that it was dry, ford doesn't "lube" it from the factory. They "dip" the splined end of the shaft into a teflon like liquid, and let it dry before assembly. Stupid not to put a grease zerk on the spilnes, but then it is fomoco. Seen many of these wear all the coating off and then the joint will bind, and cause vibrations, and clunks. There is another joint just like it on the front driveshaft if you have a 4x4, but not used as much, so the coating may still be there. Keep the boot in good shape,and the clamps tight, and it will keep the dirt outta the grease you just put in. Good luck!
